BMC Racing beat Etixx – Quick-Step to retain their men’s team time trial title on the opening day of the UCI Road World Championships in Richmond, United States.
The American squad stopped the clock on a 38.8km course in 42min 7sec, which was 11 seconds faster than runners-up Etixx - Quick-Step and 30 seconds ahead of third-placed Movistar, who had Britain's Alex Dowsett in their line-up.
Team Sky had to limp along with two injured riders following a training crash on Sunday and could only finish 1min 41sec down in ninth.
BMC Racing rider Taylor Phinney said: "It was a hard race. It was hard to keep the finish line in mind, but we did it. We wanted to do this. I'm a little bit at a loss for words.
