MotoGP champion Marc Marquez undergoes surgery

MotoGP champion Marc Marquez has undergone hand surgery but is expected to be fit to race in Japan later this month.

Marquez fractured a finger on his left hand when he fell off a mountain bike while riding on the outskirts of his hometown Cervera in Spain.

The 22-year-old was operated on by Dr. Xavier Mir on Wednesday and the Spaniard's team Honda are confident he will be fit for Motegi on October 11.

Marquez, who required surgery in April after sustaining a similar injury in a training accident while riding a dirt bike, crashed out for the fifth time this season at Aragon on Sunday and lies third in the standings behind leader Valentino Rossi.
