Athletics:Gatlin hopes fans have moved on from his drugs past

The American, who failed two drugs tests, was pipped to the gold medal by Usain Bolt  in the 100 and 200 metres.

Gatlin's agent Renaldo Nehemiah claimed his client was unfairly carrying the burden of all drug cheats.

And the sprinter hopes the championships in Beijing, China, have changed the public's perception.

When asked to sum up the event, he said: "A relief because I worked very hard this season.

"I ran, even in regular season, very hard and through all my ups and downs I still came out here. I think I showed poise and I showed that I am a human being.

"I am happy to be running in the Bird's Nest at a championship and get ready for next year. I wouldn't say (I felt) pressure. I would just say obviously I am the most criticised athlete in track and field."

Cricket:India v South Africa series named after Gandhi and Mandela

South Africa's trip to India in October will be the inaugural Mahatma Gandhi-Nelson Mandela Series, with the winner of the four-match Test section being awarded the Freedom Trophy.

Jagmohan Dalmiya, president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, said: "The struggle for freedom has been the common thread between our countries. Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela liberated our nations with non-violence and non-co-operation as their weapons which have inspired the world, to adopt and achieve their goals in a peaceful manner.

"We dedicate this trophy to Mahatma and Madiba, the guiding souls of our nations."

Cricket South Africa chief executive Haroon Lorgat added: "For the people of both our countries there is no greater duty than to uphold the ideals of both Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. As cricket loving people we must fight hard to win on the field of play but never forget to do battle in the spirit of these two great men.

"Naming all future bilateral series between our two countries after Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela is eternal news for our people and cricketers and I would like to thank the Nelson Mandela Foundation for their support."

Horse racing:Tributes pour in after jump racing great Hurricane Fly is retired

One of the most telling tributes to the exceptional ability of Hurricane Fly, whose retirement from racing was announced on Monday, is that Ruby Walsh, who rode him to win two Champion Hurdles and 18 of his 26 victories in all, always insisted that Cheltenham never really saw the true Hurricane Fly. “Some day,” Walsh said after Hurricane Fly’s victory at Leopardstown last Christmas, “he’ll go there and blow you away.”

As it turned out, Hurricane Fly’s final appearance in the Champion Hurdle, the fifth of his career, ended in honourable defeat as he came home third behind the outstanding Faugheen, a stablemate at the Willie Mullins yard in Ireland. When he then failed to beat Jezki at Punchestown the following month, it was clear that another winter campaign aimed towards a sixth appearance at Cheltenham’s Festival meeting might be asking too much.

But if Hurricane Fly never quite reached his brilliant best at Cheltenham, he still retires not just as a dual Champion Hurdle winner but also with a career record to confirm his as one of the finest and most consistent hurdlers that National Hunt has seen. His record of 22 Grade One victories over jumps may stand for decades to come - the previous record for a National Hunt horse was held by Kauto Star, with 16 - and the last of those came, appropriately enough, in the Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown in January. It was Hurricane Fly’s fifth successive victory in the race, itself a new record, and ensured that he retires unbeaten in 10 outings at the south Dublin track.

Golf:Jason Day impresses with six-stroke victory in the Barclays Championship

Jason Day has run away with the first event of the US PGA Tour’s lucrative end-of-season playoff series to assume top spot in the FedExCup standings.

Following on from his major breakthrough at the PGA Championship, Day carded a brilliant bogey-free final-round eight-under-par 62 in New Jersey on Sunday to secure his third victory from his past four starts.

The world No3 finished at 19-under for the championship, six shots clear of Henrik Stenson (66) and will head to the second event in the four-tournament playoffs in Boston starting on Thursday in pole position to land the $US10m bonus prize.

In addition to the $US1.485m winner’s purse, Day also collected 2000 FedExCup points for his latest success to leap above Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson and Jimmy Walker in the overall standings.

David De Gea hopeful of sealing Real Madrid transfer for £25million as Manchester United enter advanced talks.

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is increasingly confident of sealing his dream move to Real Madrid after official talks finally began between the two clubs for a transfer worth £25million.
Sources close to the player have told Sportsdezk that official discussions are ongoing between United and Madrid, with the Spanish giants hoping to conclude a deal today.
De Gea is understood to be in Madrid today as he is due to meet up with the Spanish national team at their training base in the capital on Tuesday evening.
Personal terms are believed to be a formality and the goalkeeper could have a medical in Madrid, should a deal be met. De Gea's agent Jorge Mendes is attempting to mediate the talks between the two clubs.
United have demanded £33million for the goalkeeper but Madrid believe it is unrealistic for a player whose contract expires in 10 months time and whose relationship with Louis van Gaal is in tatters.
