Basketball:Bulls star Derrick Rose has been injured on day one of practice

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose will require surgery after he was accidentally elbowed during the team's first day of practice on Tuesday and suffered a facial fracture.

The 26-year-old guard will have an operation to repair a broken orbital bone and the Bulls will determine a timetable for his return after he has had the surgery.

First-year coach Fred Hoiberg said: "Derrick took an elbow to the face. He took a good, hard elbow."

Rose was the NBA's MVP for the 2010-11 season but his career since then has been hampered by a string of injuries.

He missed the whole of the 2012-13 season after tearing his left ACL and then tore the medial meniscus in his right knee in November 2013, forcing him to the sidelines for the remainder of that campaign.

Rose also missed an extended period of time last season due to another knee injury.

The Bulls parted company with coach Tom Thibodeau following their second round playoff loss in May and new man Hoiberg immediately has a new Rose injury to concern him.
