INEC begins nationwide voter registration soon – Chairman

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, says the commission will soon begin the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration exerciseahead of the 2019 general election.

Yakubu said the goal of the INEC was to ensure that the voter registration was carried out in each polling unit to enable more people to get registered.

He, however, said due to the financial costs involved and the economic situation in the country, the commission needed to put relevant structures in place for a hitch-free exercise.

The INEC boss spoke when he visited PUNCH Place, the corporate  headquarters of PUNCH Nigeria Limited in Magboro, Ogun State, on Friday.

According to him, voters’ apathy to registration has led to the unnecessary postponement of the exercise which he said costs the commission a lot.

He said, “We will soon roll out the Continuous Voter Registration exercise nationwide. The challenge for us is the level we are going to reach and the duration. Owing to the current state of the economy, it is going to cost us a lot. The duration is an issue because in the
FCT, when we extended the exercise by one day, it cost us over N8m simply because everything we do in Nigeria is costly.”
Yakubu said the commission could not make provisions for Diaspora voting because it was not in the Electoral Act.
He, however, said the country could emulate countries such as Niger and Kenya which
had started allowing their citizens to vote from abroad.
The INEC chairman explained that during the CVR exercise in Edo State, over 2, 000 voters registered twice while some of them did not provide complete information.
He said, “There has been the clamour for Diaspora voting. Anything that can help our democracy, the commission is for it. We can’t do Diaspora voting at present because the
constitution has to be amended.”

'Messi is a beast' - Suarez hails Messi as best in the world

The Argentine was in inspirational form as Barcelona battered Real Betis 6-2 on Saturday, prompting his strike partner to reach for new accolades

Luis Suarez lauded Lionel Messi as a "beast" and the "best in the world" after the pair combined to devastating effect in Barcelona's 6-2 hammering of Real Betis on Saturday.

Barca made light work of Gus Poyet's men at Camp Nou as the reigning champions got their 2016-17 campaign off to a terrific start, with Suarez netting a hat-trick and Messi scoring two of his own.

Despite it being Suarez who scored a treble, the Uruguayan was left praising Messi, who enjoyed a sensational performance and also set up Suarez for one of his goals.

"Leo has started like a beast and is the best player in the world. All you can do is surrender to his feet and enjoy him," he told reporters.

Suarez commented that it was important for Barca to get off to as strong a start as possible as favourites to lift the trophy again, while he was happy to impress on an individual level.

"Barcelona is always the favourite and one of the candidates to win the league," he added.

"Always there are three or four teams fighting for it. We have to show fight because we are the holders.

"We had to start strong at home, it is always important. Obviously on an individual level I like the satisfaction of being able to help the team, that's what is essential."

'I would spend £300m on a player' - Wenger blasts Arsenal's transfer critics

'I would spend £300m on a player' - Wenger blasts Arsenal's transfer critics

Arsene Wenger declared he would spend £300 million on a single player amid calls for him to splash the cash on Arsenal signings, but went on to say he does not have that sort of money to spend.

The Gunners boss has come under fire for failing to make a significant signing so far this summer, with Granit Xhaka the only major arrival.

Moves for a big-name addition, such as Alexandre Lacazette, to their attack have not come to fruition, with the Gunners' winless start to the new Premier League campaign compounding the fans' frustrations.

However, Wenger has defended himself once again and says he has a responsibility not to spend recklessly, while he lambasted what he views as the media's over-scrutiny of the club's transfer affairs.

"Why do you say I’m reluctant [to spend] " he told reporters after Arsenal's 0-0 draw with Leicester City.

I don’t understand that. If I buy a player for £45m, I have done well, if I listen to you, but spending money in itself is not a quality,.

“I would spend £300m on a player - if I had £300m. We are a club with 600 employees who we need to have a responsible attitude [towards] as well.

“It is surprising that you come out of football games and you don’t speak about football games, you have to speak about money. If we find players who can strengthen our team then we are not reluctant to spend the money.

“They [the fans] are highly influenced by the media. That’s part of the process today but we try to make the right decisions. It is as simple as that. There is a whole team working on strengthening the team and I am not the only one."

A 4-3 home loss to Liverpool followed by a goal-less stalemate against Premier League champions Leicester have left Arsenal languishing 12th in the table.

APC’s style not helping Nigeria –PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party has said the governance style of the All Progressives Congress has not helped the country.

The party was referring to the claim by the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun that N33tn of oil revenue was not accounted for throughout the five years of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s Administration.

Spokesperson for the PDP, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, stated  this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.

Adeyeye said that the claim by the APC chairman has once again “portrayed the ruling party as being dangerously obsessed with the frivolity of bamboozling Nigerians with high-sounding figures only for entertainment purposes.”

“Unfortunately, such avoidable mischief especially on issues bordering on the nation’s economy, has continued to hunt the image of our Nation at a time we are in desperate need of investment from the international community,” Adeyeye added.

Cillessen knows about Barcelona interest, confirms Ajax boss Bosz

Cillessen knows about Barcelona interest, confirms Ajax boss Bosz

The Netherlands international has reportedly been identified as a replacement for Claudio Bravo at Camp Nou, and his boss admitted that he could leave the Eredivisie

Ajax goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen is aware of interest from Barcelona, head coach Peter Bosz has confirmed.

A report in the Netherlands on Friday claimed that the Spanish champions have lodged a bid of close to €12million for the keeper, as they attempt to land a replacement for Claudio Bravo, who is wanted by Manchester City.

Cillessen came in for criticism after the 1-1 Champions League play-off draw with Rostov, after he was wrong-footed by Christian Noboa's free-kick early in the first half.

Though he denied Barca distractions were to blame for the goal, Bosz admits that the 27-year-old is struggling to ignore the speculation, though he remains hopeful that he will stay at the Amsterdam ArenA.

"Jasper is a very great goalkeeper and I hope that he will stay here," he said ahead of Ajax's Eredivisie clash with Willem II.

"[Sporting director] Marc Overmars did report to me that there's something going on around Jasper. Jasper knew about the Barcelona interest before the match against Rostov.

"He didn't look good with that goal, but I don't believe that came about because Jasper knew about the interest. That's too easy.

"Later I will sit with him and talk about how it's going. I do understand that this is doing a lot to him. First I will sit with Japser, then with Marc, and then the club will come with a statement.

"You always want to line up with your best players. But everything can happen until August 31."

Luis Enrique is reported to be keen to sign a new goalkeeper before sanctioning Bravo's move to City, with Marc-Andre ter Stegen battling to be fully fit for the opening LaLiga match against Real Betis on Saturday.

Cillessen has claimed three league titles since joining Ajax from NEC in 2011.

Mourinho: Manchester United job is the top of my career

Mourinho: Manchester United job is the top of my career

The decorated Portuguese has managed at some of the biggest clubs in the world but insists that he has now reached his peak after taking the reigns at Old Trafford

Jose Mourinho believes taking the Manchester United job proves that he has reached his peak, despite having already managed at some of the world's biggest clubs.

Two spells at Chelsea along with stints in charge of Real Madrid, Inter and Porto have seen the Portuguese win eight league titles and two Champions League crowns.

However, Mourinho feels the switch to Old Trafford is his biggest move yet as he prepares for his first competitive home match in charge when Southampton visit in the Premier League on Friday.

"I have been in some of the biggest clubs in the world," the 53-year-old told Sky Sports.

"This is like the top of my career, but it comes in the early stage of my career because as a manager I am really young, and I think I have the best years of my career to come up.

"I was not joking [when I say 15 more years] – 53 plus 15 is 68, so I would say 14, 15, 16 more years, but I don't see myself going home before 70."

Mourinho claims to have always enjoyed a positive bond with United supporters – even when in charge of opposing clubs – but looks forward to having them fully on his side in his new role.

He continued: "I've managed many, many times against Manchester United. I've enjoyed it. Even as an opponent I could create a good relationship with the fans, I never had problems, and I have not always behaved the best way.

"The first time I was running to celebrate a goal at touchline. Maybe it is Sir Alex Ferguson's doing, with the relationship we had, I always tried to be nice and have a relationship with the fans at Old Trafford.

"This time I go and for the first time I can do what I never did, which is ask for their support. I always play against them, and this time they are on my side.

"As a fan you can go to the stadium and watch the game, or you can go and play, and what I ask them to do is go to Old Trafford and play.

"If they play, it's 80,000 plus 11, versus 11, and the opposition has no chance. I give them that responsibility – if they are behind my players we have a big chance."

Borussia Dortmund announce €376.3m record turnover

Borussia Dortmund announce €376.3m record turnover

The Bundesliga outfit have enjoyed a hugely successful year financially after posting a healthy profit, even without Champions League football

Borussia Dortmund have announced a record turnover of €376.3 million over the financial year between July 1 2015 and June 30 2016, an increase of 36.6 per cent compared to the previous year.

Chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke revealed at a news conference that revenue excluding transfer fees rose by 6.7 per cent to €281.3m, despite the club's absence from the Champions League.

After tax the Bundesliga outfit recorded a profit of €29.4m..

"The increase in turnover is a clear sign of BVB's earnings power," Watzke stated.

"We can still grow in national and international TV marketing, but that always happens with our roots firmly in our mind. We will remain the club that we are.

"Ticket and catering prices will remain stable, they will only rise by the inflation rate at a maximum.

"Our next objective is to break the €400m mark. To achieve this, it is important to be one of the major players.

"Our sporting and financial footing is unparalleled in Borussia Dortmund's 107-year history."

Watzke also confirmed that while the departures of Ilkay Gundogan and Mats Hummels are taken into account, the sale of Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Manchester United was not included as the deal was not processed until after the July 1 deadline.

Carl Zeiss Jena 0-5 Bayern Munich: Lewandowski hat-trick fires reigning champions into next round

Carl Zeiss Jena 0-5 Bayern Munich: Lewandowski hat-trick fires reigning champions into next round

The Poland international was far too strong for the lower-league team, who were thoroughly outclassed at home by the reigning Bundesliga champions

Bayern Munich started their DFB-Pokal title defence with a 5-0 win over Regionalliga Nordost side Carl Zeiss Jena courtesy of a Robert Lewandowski hat-trick and goals from Arturo Vidal and Mats Hummels at the Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld.

Prolific striker Lewandowski opened the scoring within three minutes, netted a second shortly after the half-hour mark and took his tally to three shortly before the interval to all but send his side through to the second round.

Vidal and Hummels made it five after the break, the latter heading home his first goal for the club since arriving from Borussia Dortmund.

Carlo Ancelotti had to make do without wingers Arjen Robben, Kingsley Coman and Douglas Costa due to injury and opted to start with Thomas Muller and Franck Ribery out wide.

Fourth-tier side Carl Zeiss Jena had recorded four consecutive league wins heading into the game and were high on confidence, hoping to spring a surprise.

They were never really able to worry Bayern, though, as the reigning Bundesliga champions were simply too much of a force and followed up last weekend's DFL-Supercup win over Dortmund with a comfortable win.

The Bavarians made a fine start to the game and needed only three minutes to open the scoring via Lewandowski.

The Poland international failed to get his first shot on target after some great work from Ribery down the left, his miskick ending up at Muller's feet. Lewandowski's fellow attacker knocked the ball back into his path with a clever touch and he had no trouble firing home at the second attempt.

Bayern continued to create chance after chance following their early opener, but Jena goalkeeper Raphael Koczor pulled off a number of fine saves to deny Muller, Ribery and Lewandowski.

There was nothing Koczor could do to keep out Lewandowski in the 34th minute, though. Dominik Bock's poor touch after a throughball from Ribery saw the former Borussia Dortmund striker clean through on goal and he prodded past the Jena keeper from close range to make it 2-0.

Lewandowski was unstoppable at times in the first half and completed his hat-trick two minutes before the break. Ribery cut inside from the left, set up the 27-year-old on the edge of the area and he gave Koczor no chance with a low shot into the near corner.

Bayern took their feet off the gas after half-time and Jena made an encouraging start to the second half, without really managing to trouble Manuel Neuer.

They were restricted to defending again whenever Ancelotti's men pushed forward, though, and Vidal came close to making it four when he hit the crossbar with 64 minutes on the clock, also hitting the upright later on.

But Vidal would net Bayern's fourth after all in the 72nd minute following a quick team move. Lewandowski beat the offside trap before setting up his Chilean team-mate, who tapped home from close range to add his name to the scoresheet.

There was more to come from the away side and Hummels eventually headed the fifth past Koczor with 13 minutes left on the clock after being set up by Joshua Kimmich.

Man Utd play first home match in 29 years without Giggs

Man Utd play first home match in 29 years without Giggs

The Welshman joined the Red Devils as a schoolboy in 1987 and went on to become the most decorated player in English football history before taking up a coaching role

Manchester United's 2-0 victory over Southampton was the beginning of a new era at Old Trafford - and also marked the end of an old one.

The Red Devils' triumph, courtesy of two Zlatan Ibrahimovic goals, was the first home match the club has played in nearly 29 years without Ryan Giggs having an association with the club.

Giggs joined United on schoolboy terms on November 29, 1987, with the previous game at Old Trafford a 1-1 draw against Liverpool on November 15.

The Welshman made his first-team debut in 1991 and went on to become the most decorated player in English football history, winning 13 Premier League titles as well as numerous cups.

He then took up a coaching role under both David Moyes and Louis van Gaal before deciding to depart following the Dutchman's sacking at the end of last season.

Giggs was not totally absent, however - he watched world-record signing Paul Pogba make his debut as a television pundit on Sky Sports.

Aregbesola urges attention on tourism as Osun marks festival

The Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, has called on the Federal Government to embrace tourism in the face of dwindling revenue from oil.

Speaking at the grand finale of the grand finale of the Osun Osogbo Festival in Osogbo on Friday, the governor, who was represented by the former Commissioner for Culture, Tourism and Home Affairs in the state, Mr. Sikiru Ayedun, said government and other stakeholders should explore the opportunities embedded in the festival.

He said government should incorporate the festival in its diversification plans, noting that tourism could be used to generate more revenue for the government, especially at this period that oil, which is the mainstay of the nation’s economy, was not yielding fruits like it used to.

“We unfortunately do not celebrate our culture the way we should,” he added.

Other dignitaries at the event, including the National Coordinator of the Oodua People’s Congress, Chief Gani Adams, and the governor emeritus of the Rotary International, Dr. Mike Omotosho, also called on the government to make the festival more attractive to tourists.

Adams said government and the organisers of the festival should do more to promote it in order to attract more visitors, saying that could attract more tourists to the event and boost the economy of the state. He said many countries where tourists often visit do not have as many interesting places of interest as Nigeria but lamented the neglect of promotion of culture and tourism in the country.

He said, “The Federal Government should collaborate with the state  government and the people of Osun in creating a platform where the Osun Festival could  be showcased for the world to embrace.

“Osun is a goddess that has been strong and honourable for ages. If well organised, festivals like Osun Osogbo Festival can boost the economy of any country. The cost implication of getting to this place is N5,000 and if we multiply this by the thousands of people who attended the festival, it will be a huge amount.

“I am not happy with the way the number of participants has been decreasing. This is an indication that the organisers are not doing enough to woo tourists to the festival. Osun Festival could be promoted more in many ways.

“Nothing stops major television stations in the country from covering this event live. This will whet the appetite of those who are not there and the strategy would increase participation in subsequent ones.”

“I am not pleased in any way with the organisers of this event for their way of not arranging anything to eat. We don’t celebrate Christmas without eating anything and Ileya ( Eid el Kabir)  too. How can we call this a festival when you don’t give the people just a sachet water.

Omotosho said the groove should be developed to make it more appealing to tourists from within and from outside the country to come and visit the place.

The Director General of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Mr. Yusuf Abdullah, lauded the organisers of the event for the facilities put in place to make it a hitch free event.

The festival was held with no major incident despite the rumour of the plan by some persons to kidnap the ‘Arugba Osun’ which is the cynosure of all eyes during the procession to the shrine.

Manafort’s Ukraine ties being probed by FBI

The Justice Department and the FBI are conducting a wide-ranging investigation into allegations of corrupt dealings by the government of former Ukrainian president Victor Yanukovych, including the hiring of Washington lobbyists for the regime by former Donald Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, a senior law enforcement official confirmed to Yahoo News.

The investigation, which was first reported by CNN, began two years ago after Yanukovych fled Kiev to Moscow and was replaced by the current government of Petro Poroshenko, the official said. But the inquiry has expanded in recent weeks in the wake of the discovery of documents showing $12.7 million in payments to Manafort by Yanukovych’s Party of Regions political party. Investigators are also looking into reports that Manafort recruited two top Washington lobbying firms to advocate on behalf of a Belgian nonprofit that investigators now believe may have served as a front for Yanukovych’s party. Neither of the firms, the Mercury Group and the Podesta Group, registered with the U.S. Justice Department as foreign agents — a requirement if they represented a foreign government or political party.

The disclosure of the Justice Department investigation came on the same day that Manafort stepped down as Trump’s campaign chairman — news that sent new shockwaves through Republican circles. Manafort, who served for years as a campaign consultant to Yanukovych, declined requests for comment. But a close associate of his who asked not to be identified explained his resignation this way: Manafort “is not going to take orders or relinquish power to people like” Kellyanne Conway, the new Trump campaign manager, and Steve Bannon, the newly named CEO of the campaign. The Manafort associate also blamed the rapidly unfolding Ukraine allegations on “oppo research” being spread by Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s former campaign manager and a bitter foe of Manafort

Ken Gross, a lawyer at Skadden Arps, which represents the Mercury Group, one of the lobbying firms recruited by Manafort, told Yahoo News that his firm has been “engaged to look into the matter” of whether Mercury was required to register as a foreign agent with the Justice Department when, at Manafort’s request, it agreed to represent the Brussels-based European Centre for a Modern Ukraine in 2012. Lobbying reports reviewed by Yahoo News show that the firms sought to burnish Yanokovych’s reputation and lobbied against congressional resolutions condemning the regime’s treatment of political opponents and opposing Russian aggression in Ukraine.

Another firm, the Podesta Group, headed by Tony Podesta, brother of Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta, was also recruited by a Manafort deputy and lobbied for the European Centre. In a lengthy statement Friday, the Podesta Group said it had retained another Washington law firm, Caplin & Drysdale,“to determine if we were misled by the Centre for a Modern Ukraine or any other individuals with regard to the Centre’s potential ties to foreign governments or political parties.”

The statement added: “When the Centre became a client, it certified in writing that ‘none of the activities of the Centre are directly or indirectly supervised, directed, controlled, financed or subsidized in whole or in part by a government of a foreign country or a foreign political party.’ We relied on that certification and advice from counsel in registering and reporting under the Lobbying Disclosure Act rather than the Foreign Agents Registration Act. We will take whatever measures are necessary to address this situation based on Caplin & Drysdale’s review, including possible legal action against the Centre.”

Sevgirl Musaieva, editor of Ukrainskaye Pravda, a newspaper that has conducted multiple investigations into corruption under the Yanukovich regime, told Yahoo News that she first met with a team of FBI agents at the U.S. Embassy in Kiev two years ago. At the time, the new government headed by Poroshenko had asked the FBI for assistance in tracking down millions of dollars that it believed had been stolen by Yanukovych and his associates before they fled Kiev. “The FBI came to Kiev and started an investigation,” she said. They asked her detailed questions about what she knew about allegations of corrupt dealings by the Yanukovych regime.

But sources familiar with the probe say it expanded after a Ukrainian anticorruption bureau discovered a “black book” said to show “off-the-books” cash payments from the party to Manafort totaling $12.7 million between 2007 and 2012. Entries show that some of the payments were signed by a former member of the Ukrainian Parliament who was also a board member of the European Centre. Documents also purportedly show payments to the executive director of the center, according to a source familiar with the probe, reinforcing suspicions that the group was fronting for Yanukovych’s political party.

Papa's got a brand new tattoo: Vidal inks tribute to son

Bayern Munich and Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal has new ink. This time, an insulin pump in tribute to diabetes-suffering son, Alonso.

While Arturo Vidal is known for his tattoo fixation and distinct style off the pitch, less focus is centred on his philanthropy.

The Chilean midfielder married those two facets via social media, unveiling his new tattoo - of an insulin pump.

Freshly inked next to a tattoo of his champion racehorse, naturally named Il Campione, the Bayern Munich star got the insulin pump body art as a tribute to his son, Alonso, who suffers from Type 1 diabetes.

The photo with his son was posted on Twitter along with a plea to Chilean president, Michelle Bachelet, calling for greater accessibility to insulin pumps for youths with Type 1 diabetes, as part of the AUGE healthcare plan.

"Mrs. President Bachelet, all Chilean children with Type 1 diabetes deserve an insulin pump #bombadeinsulinaAUGE," the tweet wrote.

AUGE, translating to Universal Access with Explicit Guarantees, was implemented in 2013, with the goal of easing access to adequate healthcare for Chile’s disadvantaged.

In 2015, to make amends for crashing his Ferrari while under the influence of alcohol, Vidal notably donated all of his Copa America winnings to charity.

With Bayern set to begin their Bundesliga title defence at home to Werder Bremen on August 26, Vidal found his name on the scoresheet in their 5-0 of Carl Zeiss Jena in the DFB Pokal on Friday.

I won’t represent Nigeria again if things don’t change

For weightlifter Maryam Usman Nigeria is far from being ready to win medals at the Olympics. She spoke with Pius Ayinor in Rio de Janeiro

What is it like being here in Rio?

I am proud to have represented my country Nigeria and also proud to have represented my family. Even though I may not have really done what I planned to do. I appreciate God for making me go through the competition injury-free. So, that I think is the ultimate; I really thank God. The competition was fine. I really don’t talk about it because it makes me so emotional.

Why did you say it’s so emotional for you?

I say it’s emotional because I wanted to do far better than I had done at the last Olympics but I couldn’t do that, so it hurts a lot.

What was the problem?

Actually there were a lot of problems but it’s just that you can’t be talking about everything right now. But really, I hope that the next Games do not turn out like this one. I want to appeal to whoever is in charge to please do a better job and get the athletes well prepared for the Olympics. There should be better preparations, there should be more encouragement. These athletes were competing with those that had it all. You don’t just come out of the blues to compete with people who have been training for four years. They worked and so they earned whatever they got here. It’s simply hard work. But we are trying to get on the medals table with tears and blood; with everything and it hurts if it doesn’t really work out. It’s painful.

You competed against some of the best weightlifters in the world here… Actually I have been competing with them like the lady who won the bronze medal in our event. I’ve always known her. In fact, we trained together in the United States before they took her elsewhere to train better. So she got all the preparation she needed to be on the podium; I got little or nothing but I still appreciate God for everything.

What would you say is your greatest achievement in this sport?

I got quite a few of them like the Commonwealth Games which is really one of my best. But the Olympics is the biggest sporting event and every athlete wants to be on that podium. If you don’t get on that podium for any reason, it really hurts.

If you had the opportunity to adjust your performance here, what would you change concerning everything?

If I had the opportunity to change, to start afresh, I would train well for at least two years, three years before going for a major competition like this. Events like this is huge; it is the dream of every athlete and countries to take a stand on the podium and for us coming out of Africa people see you like ‘oh she’s not going to make it’ but I tell you that if we have the right preparation, the right support and encouragement, why not?

This is your third Olympic Games and going forward are you going to give, another shot at the Games in four years time?

After my event I was talking to my coach and I said to him, if this is how things will continue; if this is the way Nigeria will continue to prepare for major events, then I don’t think I can continue to be a part of it. It is frustrating because you can’t just keep coming to the Olympic Games and keep getting the same result. You can’t have a new result doing the same thing; if you desire a new result then you have to do things differently. So if things will change I might give it a try but if it is going to continue like this, I don’t want to stress myself anymore. I can’t endure this kind of arrangement anymore.

But the first two Olympics you went to Nigeria did not prepare well too…

Yes, but I want to say London (2012 Olympics) was better. If not for the technical problems we had in my sport, we would have won one or two medals.

Some people say Nigerian teams do better when they don’t prepare well. It sounds illogical but do you share…

I disagree with that. This is an event people have been preparing for, for four years. You just can’t jump in within a month and half to the Games thinking you can beat those who have been training for more than four years. It’s just not possible; let’s not even think about it.

People say the preparation to London was good and Rio was bad but what’s the difference in the results?

There’s a huge difference talking about myself and my own results. In London I knew I was actually competing because of the way we prepared.

Trump launches first TV ad of general election

Amid his latest campaign shakeup, Donald Trump released his first television ad of the general election on Friday and, like much of his presidential campaign, the commercial focused on immigration.

Until Friday, the GOP nominee had yet to release a television ad, perplexing some observers as he slipped in the polls to Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, whose campaign has spent millions on ads. (Clinton’s team also released a new ad earlier in the day.)

The 30-second Trump spot, which the campaign said would air in Ohio, Florida, North Carolina and Pennsylvania for the next 10 days, is titled “Two Americas: Immigration” and aims to offer a stark contrast between Trump’s America and what the country would be like with Hillary Clinton as president.

“The system stays rigged against Americans,” a narrator warns over muted images of crowded refugee camps, and men being both arrested by Border Patrol agents and strolling freely through the street. “Syrian refugees flood in. Illegal immigrants convicted of committing crimes get to stay, collecting Social Security benefits, skipping the line.”

As the narrator continues, claiming that Clinton’s White House would leave “our border open,” a citation quickly appears at the bottom of the screen for the Center for Immigration Studies, a conservative, anti-immigration think tank, whose past reports have been deemed misleading by several leading nonpartisan immigration-research organizations as well as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

In the ad, the words “border open” linger in large print above images of people riding atop a train and walking through what looks like the one of the many Homeland Security-sanctioned pedestrian ports of entry along the U.S.-Mexico border.

On the other hand, the ad continued, “Donald Trump’s America is secure.” The desaturated, foreboding scenes of lawlessness under Clinton then give way to brightly lit shots of helicopters patrolling the border and happy non-Hispanic-looking families. Red, white and blue banners declare “the border secure” and “our families safe.”

The commercial was released as the Trump campaign underwent its latest reorganization. Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort announced Friday that he would resign. Earlier in the week, Trump hired Breitbart executive Stephen Bannon as his campaign CEO and pollster Kellyanne Conway as his campaign manager.

The ad has already sparked a reaction from within the Clinton campaign, with press secretary Brian Fallon and deputy press secretary Jesse Ferguson taking to Twitter to dispute Trump’s claims.

Chibok girls: FG begins swop moves

President Muhammadu Buhari

There are indications that the Federal Government has begun moves to exchange the Chibok girls with some Boko Haram detainees.

Saturday PUNCH gathered that as part of the moves, security agencies had started conducting a fresh profiling of  the Boko Haram detainees in line with a directive of the Federal Government.

It was learnt the profiling would include the time they were arrested and the de-radicalisation programme they had undergone.

Findings showed that besides the military, the police, the Nigeria Prison Service, the office of the National Security Adviser and the Ministry of Justice would be involved in the swop talks.

It was gathered that although the government had not decided on the militants that would be released in exchange for the Chibok girls, insurgents, who had not been tried could  be the first beneficiaries of the swop deal.

It was also learnt that detainees, who had undergone the “de-radicalisation” programme of the government, would be considered under the arrangement.

Investigations showed that the government had started addressing problems that could hinder the swop talks with the sect following its split early this month.

Boko Haram had, on August 3, 2016, split with ISIS naming Abu Musab al-Barnawi as the leader of the group.

But a few days later, the former leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, in a video, dismissed the appointment of the new leader and insisted that he remained the authentic leader of the group.

Shekau, in a video released on Sunday, said the sect was ready to exchange more than 200 girls abducted on April 14, 2014 at Chibok Secondary School for its fighters that were being detained by the Federal Government.

The PUNCH had exclusively reported on Tuesday that the Federal Government was in a dilemma over the faction of the sect it should hold talks with.

A top government officer, who confided in Saturday PUNCH, said that the government had started addressing the problem.

He said, “I can assure you that the government is identifying genuine members of the sect it is negotiating with.  We won’t repeat the mistake the immediate past government made by talking with those who will not produce the girls.

“Government is not opposed to swopping. Other countries, including Israel, have done it. In fact, security agencies are conducting fresh profiling of the sect members that are being detained. That is the first move. If there are sect members that have not been tried, they will be the first set to be considered under the arrangement.”

Attempts to speak with the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, failed as he did not pick calls to his mobile telephone. Neither he nor his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Segun Adeyemi, replied enquiries sent as text messages.

But the minister had on Sunday said that the government was in touch with members of the sect.

“The government is in touch with those behind the video. We are on top of the situation,” he had stated.

Military operations will continue —Defence headquarters

The Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, has said that the military operations against Boko Haram will continue.

According to him, the military is profiling the arrested Boko Haram members.

He said, “The issue of dialogue rests with the political leadership of this county. If they decide, fine. But our own activities would surely go on in any security threatened location.”

Abubakar said the military would continue to search for the Chibok girls and other people abducted by the sect, adding that the armed forces were being professional in handling the issue.

He said, “Whatever the government wants is what we are going to do and we are very sure that we are doing enough to ensure that we push forth carefully, professionally and cautiously in order not to jeopardise the ongoing efforts by the military vis a vis the lives of our loved ones.

“We are being very careful. You know we are profiling all these people who we arrested or those who surrendered. We are profiling them properly. The issue of saying that they are going back to the bush does not even arise.

“The most important is that we are able to put them where they belong and put them under maximum care so that there would not be any apprehension.”

On the claim by the sect that some Chibok girls had been killed in military bombardment, he stated, “The Nigeria Air Force uses precision equipment against only registered targets. So, how are we going to randomly bomb where they are? The military is doing all it can without jeopardising their lives.”

Abubakar also commented on the latest video released by the sect. He said, “The person that appeared in the video is not Shekau. He is just a replica. He is just trying to work on the psychology of people. They all know that people know that we have completely dealt with these people so they are now doing this media war. That is what they are doing.”

When asked about the profiling and the number of Boko Haram detainees in prison custody, the Nigeria Prison Service spokesman, Francis Enobore, directed all inquiries to the military.

The DSS has yet to get a spokesman.

Experts ask FG to get credible negotiators

Some security experts have urged  the Federal Government to involve credible people in the negotiation for the swopping of the Chibok school girls for Boko Haram detainees.

They also cautioned the government to consider national security before finalising a deal with the insurgents.

A retired Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Tsav, said  that it was important for trusted and credible persons to be involved in the negotiations with the violent sect.

He said, “One thing the government could do is by asking the Boko Haram detainees that would be released to sign an agreement that they would not engage in violence after they are released, but if they did, the alternative is for military action against them to continue.”

Tsav said it was necessary to engage Boko Haram for the release of the 219 schoolgirls, whom he described as precious souls.

Another security analyst, Ben Okezie, said the proposed negotiation must involve the best hands in the security circle, including psychologists and criminologists.

While expressing reservations over the move to swop the girls for insurgents, Okezie cautioned the government against releasing hardened and unrepentant insurgents who he said would likely go back to the trenches.

“If you are going to release Boko Haram insurgents, now that they are trying to regroup, they would surely go back (to fight) and the insurgency will be worse than before,” he said.

A security expert, John Enweliku, said the Federal Government should first verify whether Boko Haram was serious about the swop deal.

He said if the group was serious about it, the government could then go ahead in the deal.

Enweliku, however, cautioned the Federal Government against negotiating with the wrong party.

He said, “The authenticity of the negotiation claim is the issue here. The other time when the Federal Government tried toeing the path of negotiation with the militants, they ended up meeting with the wrong party.

“Swopping the Boko Haram members for the Chibok girls is a welcome development. It happens even in advanced countries, but we should ensure we negotiate with the right people this time around.

“The girls’ lives are important, but the Federal Government should tread cautiously. Their abduction has brought pain to their families and to the country as a whole.

“And I am sure that with the present leadership of our various security agencies, they are capable of containing the activities of the militants when released.”

Also, a counter-terrorism expert based in the United States, Sunday Ogunlana, said it was not wrong for the Federal Government to swop the Chibok girls for Boko Haram detainees.

Ogunlana, however, cautioned the government against negotiating from the position of weakness.

He said, “If these people (Boko Haram) are sincere that they want to release the girls, I don’t see anything bad in the negotiation, but it should be done with caution. And the Federal Government also must be transparent about it. They have to tell us who is setting the rules of the negotiation? How many Boko Haram members are they swopping for the Chibok girls? Are we negotiating from a position of strength or weakness?

“If the girls are united with their families again, it is something good and no amount of sacrifice is too much to rescue them. Look at what happened in the United States few days ago, when the US sent $400m in cash to Iran to free four American hostages held in Iran. These countries will tell you they don’t negotiate with terrorists, but that they dialogue.

“We can try that as well. We have used force before and we are still using it, but it has not been working. So if truly the Chibok girls exist and they are still being held, the Federal Government should verify and negotiate with the right group, and this time around, from the position of strength.”

But a security consultant, Patrick Agbam, said the Federal Government should look for a new way to rescue the Chibok girls.

He said releasing Boko Haram members to the public again could create more security problems for the country in the future.

He said, “Everybody is eager to see the Chibok girls released to their families. Their lives are in danger now and they need to be rescued. It is very easy to say they should swop, but how are we sure that the Boko Haram members released will not create another problem in the future? Are we sure they will keep to their end of the deal? We should be cautious.

“We want to see the girls back, but I think the government should look for a new way to rescue the girls. When you release criminals, they will come back to haunt you.”

Zlatan scores 2, Pogba stars as United beats Southampton 2-0

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice and Paul Pogba excelled in his first game back at Manchester United as the team's high-profile offseason signings starred in a 2-0 win over Southampton in the Premier League on Friday.

The good times appear to be back at Old Trafford, with Ibrahimovic's towering header in the 36th minute and penalty in the 52nd earning United a second straight victory to open the league season under new manager Jose Mourinho.

Ibrahimovic has already scored three league goals, to complement his winner in the Community Shield against Leicester. As pleasing to Mourinho was the way Pogba slotted into the side in his first appearance since a world-record $116 million transfer, displaying his range of tricks, vision, athleticism and box-to-box energy.

Pogba lasted the full game, despite having not played since France's loss to Portugal in the European Championship final on July 10. He could even have scored in injury time when he sprinted the length of the field to follow a counter-attack, and shot just wide.

''You can see even more the ego, the personality; he is so comfortable in the skin of a star,'' Mourinho said. ''For 10 days' work, first match of the season, not even 10 minutes of a friendly, I think he played phenomenal.''

Having missed United's 3-1 win at Bournemouth last weekend, Pogba was given a warm reception in his first game in the famous red of United at Old Trafford since a substitute appearance against West Bromwich Albion in March, 2012. He was a lanky, raw 19-year-old then; he returns to United as a powerfully built star of world football.

After two forgettable initial touches around 15 seconds into the game - he miscontrolled a short pass, then hacked at thin air as he scrambled to recover possession - Pogba showed just why United went to such lengths to sign him from Juventus.

One jinking run past three Southampton players and to the edge of the visitors' box just before halftime had the Old Trafford faithful purring, as did a shimmy early in the second half that left his marker on his backside. United fans roared with delight at many of his sublime touches and runs, with Pogba growing stronger as the game went on.

''I came back home,'' said Pogba, who was sold by United for virtually nothing in 2012 after making just seven substitute appearances in three years at the club. ''I am very happy for the team. I hope to continue like this and get better and keep winning.''

The expensive midfielder already looking settled; the star striker scoring with ease; Wayne Rooney seemingly revitalized. These are exciting times at United after three lean years since Alex Ferguson's retirement.

Ibrahimovic's first goal owed as much to Rooney's excellent cross as the Swedish striker's bullet header. The Swedish striker was surrounded by defenders but rose highest to meet Rooney's right-wing delivery and direct a header back into the corner.

Ibrahimovic then converted a penalty after left back Luke Shaw was tripped by substitute Jordy Clasie as he surged into the Southampton area. There didn't seem any hesitation when Ibrahimovic took the ball and placed it on the spot, and Mourinho confirmed after the match that the striker had replaced Rooney as United's first-choice penalty-taker.

It's early days but United already looks to have that menace and fear factor about them under Mourinho, who has spent around $200 million this offseason to revive the fortunes of a fallen giant.

''It is like a big puzzle,'' Ibrahimovic said. ''We need to put the puzzle together and then work on it.''

This was the first of a string of regular Friday night games in the Premier League, a new addition to the schedule this season.

I and others brought Buhari to salvage Nigeria –Obasanjo

obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that he and four other eminent Nigerians brought President Muhammadu Buhari to salvage Nigeria from its current challenges.

He said they took the decision when they felt that the country stood at a crossroads.

Obasanjo said, “Three or four other of us from different part of the country got together and said to ourselves what do we do

“We said what is the problem with us and why are we still not growing. We got talking and knew we needed to do something.

“What do we need to deal with for this Nigeria of ours to become what God has created it to be. A land flowing with milk and honey, that is the intention of God for creating Nigeria.”

The former President, who spoke on Thursday at a reception held in his honour at the Government House, Yola, Taraba State, said so far, Buhari had not disappointed the country.

He said, “So far, Buhari has not disappointed us. I trust him, he will not fail Nigerians. I know he will overcome the challenges the country is currently facing.”

He, however, said Nigeria needed to get its acts right in the area of politics, governance and leadership for the country to develop.

According to the Cable, Obasanjo reiterated his decision to dump the Peoples Democratic Party was final.

He said that having drawn the curtain on his membership of the PDP, there is no coming back.

Obasanjo said, “In the part of the country where I come from, there is a saying that you cannot say ‘good night’ and come back to say ‘good evening’ in the same place.

“So for me, it is good night for the PDP and that is all.”

It will be recalled the former president dumped the PDP in a dramatic manner.

71-year-old man battles ex-policeman over land grabbing, harassment

A 71-year-old man, Mr. Sunday Itu of Ojali Village in Oglewu community, Ohimini Local Government Area of Anambra State has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, over land grabbing and harassment of the people of the area by one ex-police officer, Adamina Ejemi.

Itu said the activities of the retired officer and his group were capable of causing breach of peace in the community.

He said but for restrictions by certain elders of the community, the youths in the area would have since caused the untoward in the area over the issue.

He said, “One ex-police officer, who is expected to be a custodian of law, even after his retirement, ASP Adamina Ejemi, along his cohorts, are harassing the community and selling people’s land with impunity.”

The family alleged that some prominent indigenes of the community were behind the land grabbers.

In a letter by the family lawyers, Onche Adakole & Associates, made available to newsmen in Awka on Thursday, the Itu family said the speculators illegally sold their property.

They said the parcel of land with economic trees which was fraudulently balkanised and sold had been legally occupied by the Itu family for a long time.

They added that the practice in Ojali was that individuals and families owned the land and not the community under which guise the land were being sold by their oppressors.

Their lawyer’s petition read, “You acted against the will of our client and upon an illegal and baseless claim that it is the community that owns the land.

“You are aware that it is the individual and families that own land and not community. So, you have no right to sell any part of our client’s land under the guise of exercising authority as community leaders.

“We demand your immediate withdrawal from this land and advise that you return money to whosoever you may have collected it from.”

The family assured that it would remain law abiding, but would resist any attempt by strangers to encroach into their land.

We will not want to take the laws into our hands; we thereby call on the Inspector General of Police to urgently look into this case and cause it to be investigated to avoid breakdown of law and order in the community,” the petition read.

INEC can’t guarantee conclusive elections in 2019 –Chairman

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, says given the challenges and malpractices that have marred elections both in the past and in recent times in the country, the commission cannot guarantee that the general elections in 2019 will be conclusive.

He said any attempt to give such assurance at this time would be second-guessing the outcome of the election, noting that it had become inevitable for the commission to declare some elections inconclusive.

The INEC boss, who spoke when he led some staff of the commission, including a national commissioner, Mr. Solomon Soyebi, on a visit to PUNCH Place, the corporate headquarters of PUNCH Nigeria Limited in Magboro, Ogun State, on Friday, stated that if everyone, including the staff of the commission, the voters, politicians and other stakeholders, play by the rules, there would be no inconclusive election.

He said, “We can’t second-guess to say this is the outcome of an election before it happens, unless we are not conducting elections. We hope it won’t lead to that, but if it happens, the constitution has a way out of it.

“There is no way the commission will declare any election conclusive where the threshold is not met. We can only declare an election conclusive when we are satisfied with the law and electoral act because all elections are governed by constitutional provisions, provisions of the electoral act and our guidelines. This is the challenge that we face, but we must express it because we (INEC) will not compromise.

“The constitution of this country provides condition for making return in an election. If that threshold is not met, can INEC make a declaration? We can’t, under the law, and if you do so the court will nullify the election and then we incur costs to do the election again.

“As to what will happen in 2019, only God knows, but we will abide by the provisions of the constitution, the electoral law and our guidelines in making declarations. We can only hope for the best.”

The INEC chairman, who spoke extensively while responding to questions on the inconclusive elections conducted by the commission, explained that majority of the 137 elections conducted by the commission in the past eight months were conclusive, dismissing insinuations that the commission had been organising inconclusive elections.

He explained that people had been used to conclusive elections on first ballot, pointing out that the political terrain has changed completely. He added that most of the elections were a product of the 2015 general elections and that there were no less than 680 court cases emanating from the 2015 general elections.

“It is not strange. More than any commission in the history of this country, we have conducted more elections outside the context of general elections. People often forget that we had inconclusive elections in the past.

“The first inconclusive election in Nigeria was in 1979, and that was the election that brought Shagari into power. We have forgotten about the mathematics of what two-third of 19 was, whether it was 12 or not. Eventually, the matter wasn’t resolved by the commission. People like Richard Akinjide went to court, and eventually the court decided the winner in 1979.

“In recent times, we have had series of inconclusive elections. The governorship election in Bauchi State was inconclusive because of post-election violence and INEC concluded the election after two weeks. The same thing happened in Imo; the first election that brought in Rochas Okorocha was inconclusive, until two weeks after. In 2015, Taraba, Abia and Imo were inconclusive and there were other constituency elections where elections were inconclusive.

“The most difficult election for the commission to conduct are off-season elections, because the attention of everybody focuses on a particular constituency and the political actors and gladiators and their antics have time to mobilise nationwide to descend on a particular constituency, which made the conclusion of such elections very difficult.

“What I want Nigerians to understand is that our democracy is maturing. If it matures, it cannot be the way we used to do things before. The mindset would have to change. Days were long gone when politicians do everything they can to be declared winners, knowing that the case would end up in court.

“So, let’s hope for the best, but it is everybody’s responsibility to make this democracy work. Citizens can protect their mandate. If we play by the rules and we are patient, I’m sure we will minimise all these issues leading to inconclusiveness.”

However, the INEC boss said apart from power play by political gladiators, emergence of strong political parties had made the elections more competitive. “When we had one dominant political party and other smaller parties, elections were always conclusive, but now, by evolution, not by imposition, we have two strong political parties, fielding strong candidates, making the elections extremely competitive,” he added.

When asked if he was being teleguided by the executive as rumoured in some quarters, he said there was no such thing, noting that both the opposition and the ruling parties had accused him of being teleguided by the executive anytime their party didn’t win an election.

“I have made a commitment to this country that the day I think I cannot perform this job in good conscience, I would leave, afterall I have a job to go back to; teaching. So, it’s not true that we are being teleguided,” he said.

Yakubu equally lamented that the nation had not been penalising electoral offenders, saying it was painful that over 1,000 persons died as a result of post-election violence in Kaduna in 2011 and nobody was arrested or prosecuted.

He added that it was also regrettable that the recommendations of the Mohammed Uwais-led committee and the Ahmed Lemu-led committee had not been implemented, saying time had come for the government to set up an electoral offences commission and tribunal, to which all violators of electoral acts would be subjected, including staff of the commission.

He said, “Under the electoral act, INEC is supposed to penalise electoral offenders and what are the steps: first, we have to make arrest, but INEC has no police, so we can’t arrest. Secondly, we have to investigate to be able to have evidence that can be tendered in court during prosecution, but we have no power to investigate, and for me, most extraordinarily, that means INEC is supposed to prosecute its own staff. How can INEC prosecute itself?

Meanwhile, when asked what the commission had done in punishing some of its staff found guilty of electoral offences, the INEC chairman said over a hundred of its staff, both serving and retired had been invited by the EFCC in connection with the allegation of financial misappropriation levelled against the former Minister of Petroleum, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Maduekwe.

The EFCC had alleged that some key staff of INEC benefitted from the $26m allegedly shared by the former Minister in the run-up to the 2015 general elections.

Yakubu said, “The first one when I came in was the revelation coming out of what you people in the media call DiezaniGate.  So far, over a hundred staff of INEC had been invited. At a point, we toiled with the idea of speaking to the EFCC to see the weight of evidence they have so that we can take administrative action against our own staff, but they are innocent until they are proven guilty. They have to be charged to court, but we have taken notice and we have a complete list.

“If you hear a certain number this week, the following week, it would have increased, arising from the interrogation of more staff, so we have not got to the end of it, and it’s not good for the commission to take decision in pieces, but eventually, some of them who are culpable will be charged to court.”

He, however, assured that the commission would continue to deepen the use of technology, learn from what happened, make the smart card reader better and add new initiatives. “We are committed to ensure that every ballot counts and is accounted for,” he said.

Police arrests 5-man robbery gang, others in Imo

IMO State Police Command has nabbed a five-man gang of armed robbers who invaded a victim’s (names withheld) compound at Umukabia Nkwerre and carted away property and cash.

Among items recovered from the gangsters are a Nissan Xterra Jeep with Reg. No KSF 829 MM, assorted electronic gadgets, a generator and handsets.

Parading the suspects and 30 others, the State Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, told newsmen in Owerri that a team was quickly dispatched to the scene where the kingpin, one Chinoso Okoroafor from Ihiala, Anambra State, James Eze, native of Oguta, Onyeka Uchendu from Ubomiri, Mbaitoli LGA and Tina Damian, wife of one of the suspects, were arrested.

He said that another coordinated effort of operatives of the command yielded fruit when the team arrested one Charles Anayo Obi, a native of Amadaba Ibiasoegbe in Oru West LGA and member of a notorious three-man gang of kidnappers.

According to him, Obi is believed to be involved in series of kidnap/armed robbery incidents in the state.

Lakanu pointed out that the suspect had made useful statements to the police, disclosing the identity of other members of the gang still at large.

Also, the police boss said a member of a gang of four robbery suspects, who robbed one Isaac Ugochukwu Mbika of his Sienna car, was arrested.

He said that the arrested suspect, Godwill Amaefule, 36, from Port Harcourt, Rivers State “is now assisting the police to track down other fleeing members of the gang.”

He also disclosed that a gang, who specialized in robbing and raping victims at Akwakuma was smashed through the police.

Lakanu disclosed that one of the nabbed suspects, Chukwudi Nwoke, 24, from Isu in Nwangele LGA had made useful statements that would assist to trace other members still at large.

Two men rape 10-year-old girl in Jigawa •Police arraign 53 for rape, sodomy

The Jigawa State Police Command said  over the last three weeks, it has charged 53 people to court over rape and sodomy highlighting the spate of the crimes in the state.

One of the suspects charged to court was 40-year-old Idris Abdu, who was reported at the Hadejia Police Station to have taken a nine-year-old girl to his room and raped her. The suspect later confessed to the crime.

The State Commissioner of Police, Henry Fadairo, told journalists in Dutse, the state capital,  in another case reported at the Gumel Police Station, the police were shocked when the father of the victim gave details of what happened to his 10-year-old daughter.

“The father of the 10-year-old girl reported at the Gumel Police Station that he saw his daughter holding some money. When he asked how she got the money, the girl said that one Mohammed Abdullahi, a 40-year-old man,  took her  to his room and raped her after which he gave her money.

“The father of the girl said another man, identified as 25-year old Nasiru Mohammed forced the same girl into an uncompleted building and raped her again.

“The girl told her father that the first man who raped her (Abdullahi) had also raped her 10-year-old friend. The father of the second victim also reported the case. The culprits confessed to their crimes, revealing that they had raped the girls on many times.”

Fadairo said that less than one month after he took over the mantle of leadership of the command, he charged the 53 suspects to court over 28 rape incidents and 25 sodomy allegations.

He told journalists that the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, is bent on ensuring that those involved in the crime are prosecuted.

According to him, there is need for parents, religious and traditional rulers to rise up against the increasing cases of rape and sodomy in the state.

He said, “I have started parading them publicly in order to make their prosecution a deterrent to others.”

Fadairo said that in Garki Local Government Area of the state, a mother of an eight-year-old girl reported to the police that when her daughter was on her way to school, the Village Head of Kargo village, AbubakarYa’u, a 60-year-old man, waylaid the girl and took her to his room where he raped her.

He said investigations by the police indicated that the village head actually committed the crime, adding that the suspect will soon be charged to court for prosecution.

I knelt and begged him, yet he slaughtered my daughter in my presence – Mother of MTN worker murdered by suitor

Scars from stabbing on Mrs. Ashinwo’s back

Mrs Ashinwo

The inch-long scar on the neck of 53-year-old Mrs. Christiana Ashinwo, is one of the physical reminders of the horror of Sunday, April 24, 2016.

She sat on a chair quietly in the sitting room of a house in Agbado area of Lagos, which she built with the sweat and suffering of many years as a single mother and plank vendor. Her head was bowed when our correspondent went to meet her.

But when Mrs Ashinwo looked up, her eyes were glazed with a faraway look that would easily giveaway the fact that she could have witnessed trauma, great trauma that she obviously had yet to recover from.

Who would blame her? Watching her daughter killed before her presence, is enough to give her chills every moment for the rest of her life. The horrific incident she witnessed and survived few months ago in Kwara State remains so fresh on her mind.

Our correspondent had reported on April 30 how Mrs. Ashinwo and her daughter, 30-year-old Oluwatosin Ashinwo, an employee of MTN in Ilorin, Kwara State were attacked by a knife-wielding obsessed suitor of the young lady, 45-year-old David Ogundele.

Mrs. Ashinwo survived the attack, her daughter didn’t.

The older woman’s injuries were no less extensive, as she spent many days in the emergency unit of a hospital in Ilorin as doctors battled to save her life. She would later spend another two months in the intensive care unit of the hospital.

Our correspondent paid her a visit in Lagos, days after she was discharged and brought back home.

With a very raspy voice and intermittent cough that came out with each word, one would conclude that all was still not well with the woman, who was left for dead in the pool of her own blood in Ilorin that fateful day.

For her, the agony she feels with each morsel of food and gulp of liquid passing through her knife-damaged throat was nothing compared to the daily torment of thinking about how she lost her first child, breadwinner, and daughter.

“I knelt down to beg my daughter’s killer as he held the knife that later took my daughter’s life. I thought kneeling would pacify him,” she said.

The story Mrs. Ashinwo told was one of agony, climaxing at the moment she laid in a pool of her own blood and tried with every ounce of her waning strength to crawl to where her daughter laid lifeless.

“I was dead; I don’t know why God brought me back. But I am sure I was dead that day. I tried to crawl and touch my daughter but my strength failed. I could see she was not breathing. There was blood everywhere; mine and my daughter’s,” she said.

According to her, the day of the attack was the first time he would meet the killer, Ogundele.

Mrs. Ashinwo said, “The first time we spoke, he called me and introduced himself as Engineer David. He told me he was my daughter’s friend and I should help him to appeal to my daughter to marry him.
“I was surprised but I told him that my daughter was a 30-year-old woman. She was free to make her own decision about who to marry.

“He called again some weeks later and said he and my daughter had settled the issue.

“The next time, he called, he was very angry. He said he had never been humiliated the way my daughter humiliated him. It was few days after my daughter’s birthday. He said he organised a birthday party for her and invited his friends and even bought a car as gift but she did not honour the invitation.

“I did not know what to say. My daughter already had a car and already has someone else she wanted to marry. I told him not to be annoyed and forget about the issue since my daughter had made up her mind.

“Prior to April 30, I started having some bad dreams about my daughter and became really concerned. I decided that it was time to go and check on her to know how she was doing.

“On my way to Ilorin, the man (Ogundele) called again and said as soon as I get to Ilorin, he would come and pick me at the park. I said nothing. But since I did not even know him I went straight to my daughter’s place without calling him.

“When I met my daughter, she took me to a woman, who seemed to be her confidante. We ate and the woman told me that my daughter had a fight with one man called Engineer David that day and the man threatened to kill her.

“I did not waste time; I stood up and told her I must report to the police. But my daughter told me to let the matter go. She said I was just making a big issue out of a small matter.

“She said that was why she did not like telling me some things some times. I let the matter go because I did not want to be like an overzealous mother.”

But that was one decision that would haunt Mrs. Ashinwo every second of every day.

The following day, Sunday April 30, without any hint about the danger that lurked in the shadow, she and her daughter had just got home from somewhere that day. As they entered Oluwatosin’s flat, Ogundele, who was said to be have been hiding around the flat, cornered them in the flat.

Mrs. Ashinwo said, “He entered and locked the door behind him and put the key in his pocket. I had just finished bathing when my daughter called out to me that he was in the flat. I quickly dressed and prepared to meet the man that had been disturbing me so much with calls. When I saw him, I said ‘Good day, pleased to meet you’ and he replied that, ‘there is nothing good about today.’

“As soon as I saw him, I sighted the knife he was holding. I asked him what the problem was and he kept quiet. I did not understand what was happening. He was saying so many things I did not understand. I asked him if my daughter owed him anything. I promised to pay back everything. He said she did not owe him anything. He was just angry.

“I told him that even if they offended each other, it should not be that bad that it would require the use of a knife. I told them they could still be friends. When I realised he had no intension of dropping the knife, I went down on my knees. I was begging him to drop the knife. Then, he came to where I knelt and carried me up.

“Just when I thought the issue would end, he rushed at Tosin and held her down on the bed. He started stabbing her furiously. As my daughter screamed, I rushed at him. I could not just stand and he stared stabbing me too over the body.”

By the time the attack was over, Mrs. Ashinwo had been stabbed at least 10 times in her torso, with the knife going through her throat in the

As all became quiet in the room where the dying women lay, Ogundele, dropped his weapon, the bloody knife and locked his victims in the room, Saturday PUNCH learnt.

Minutes went by as Mrs. Ashinwo tried to call out to her daughter who was bleeding from every parts of the body.

She said she was so weak she could not even call out to her daughter who had become lifeless at that point.

Lucky for her, she heard someone in a kitchen behind her daughter’s window. The woman said she used the last ounce of her strength to call the person, who later raised the alarm.

By the time the door was broken down, it was too late for Oluwatosin. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

As Mrs. Ashinwo told this story, there was no doubt it was with tremendous agony as she relived the gory details.

Saturday PUNCH had earlier reported that Ogundele was arrested in Osun on Saturday, May 14, after the police tracked him down with undercover agents.

But Mrs. Ashinwo said the police have not even contacted her to give evidence. She said she could not understand why Ogundele has not been charged to court.

The spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi, said he did not have information about the prosecution of the suspect when our correspondent called him.

He said he would call back to give update about the status of the case but had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

My life is in danger –Man who named dog after Buhari

Ifeoma and her daughter

Mr. Joachim Chinakwe, the 41-year-old trader arrested and detained at the Sango Ota Police Station, Ogun State, on August 13, 2016, for naming his dog Buhari, has said his life is no longer safe.

Speaking with our correspondent on Friday minutes before he was again locked behind bars at the State Police Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, the capital, after initially being released last Tuesday, the father of one who hails from Delta State, said he feared for his life because he does not know what could happen to him next.

“I had to leave for Eleweran very early on Friday after receiving a letter on Thursday evening inviting me to the Command. I thought I was being called over for a peace talk, I never knew it was for the purpose of detaining me again.

“I am a law-abiding citizen of this country, I have never deliberately committed any offence before, I don’t know why I am being treated like this. I only called the dog that name for the love I have for President Muhammadu Buhari and Nigeria, I didn’t mean to taunt or hurt anybody with it. I don’t know what next could follow this, I am afraid for my life, I am in danger, please help me,” Chinakwe said before the telephone line went off.

The latest twist to the matter has caused relatives and friends who have been running round to free the trader serious distress. His 26-year-old wife, Ifeoma, and 18-month-old daughter, Temi, has also been badly affected by the situation.

Looking frail and barely able to support her body weight, the woman whined in pain as she made her way from the bathroom at the back of the small compound into one of the two small rooms she and her family shares. With eyes still swollen from days of crying and her bulging stomach putting an extra burden on her shoulders and weak legs, it is one of the most agonising periods in the life of the young mother who is almost due for the delivery of her second child. Since her husband was first arrested on the orders of one Kalilu, a public toilet operator in their Omikunle neighbourhood who accused him of deliberately naming his dog Buhari, after his father just to taunt him and members of the Hausa community, life has not been the same for the woman.

According to the woman the latest development has affected her health and that of Temi terribly. Apart from now struggling to survive without their breadwinner and ‘protector’, Ifeoma says the two of them have been on medication since her husband’s travails began.

“This is the saddest period of my life,” the heartbroken woman said fighting back tears. “Since I met and married my husband three years ago, I have never felt this bad or suffered this much. But since this problem started, I and my daughter have been badly affected,” she continued. “When I went to the police station last Sunday morning to see him, the officers instead of allowing me in, started abusing me. They told me that they would make sure I give birth behind my husband’s cell. Even though I was crying and pleading with them to allow me see him, they kept abusing me, not minding my present condition.

“Since that day, I have not been able to eat well. Also, I and Temi have been very sick and we have been on medications. On several occasions she would wake me up at night, crying and asking after her father. I don’t know what to tell her, so I would also cry.

“The two of us cannot sleep in the house alone, so in the evenings, I go to my aunty’s house at Ojuore to stay till morning before returning home. I am just praying that all the stress that I have been through and tears that I have shed the past few days don’t affect the baby or even make me to lose the child because already, I am not as healthy as I was before this problem started. I won’t lie to you; life has not been the same for me and my daughter without him around,” the heavily-pregnant mother said before finally succumbing to her emotions.

It was a few minutes of intense crying, her sorrowful voice rent the entire room – it was the sight of an injured woman pouring out her heart.

Obinna Obasi, a relation to the detained man who also spoke to our correspondent during the visit to the family house in a remote part of Sango Ota on Friday, said the case apart from taking its toll on their energies and time, had also drained their pockets.

He said relatives and friends of Chinakwe have even had to borrow money from a micro finance bank to hire lawyers to fight his case – one of whom he said even duped them in the process.

“This matter has really drained us financially,” Obasi revealed. “The little that we even have has been exhausted. We have spent everything on us to get a lawyer and also run around trying to find a solution to this problem. In fact, a few days ago, we had to borrow some money from a micro finance bank because we didn’t want him to remain and die in police cell. The first lawyer we paid to handle the case for us disappeared with our money. We had to go beyond our power to raise money to hire another lawyer. To be honest, I cannot estimate the amount of money we have spent so far on this case in trying to get Joe released,” he said.

Narrating how the entire issue started, Obasi, who said he was with the detained man at the time of his first arrest last Saturday, explained that all efforts to get the matter resolved has been frustrated by the accuser and his backers who have only been pretending to be on the side of peace.

“Kalilu, the main accuser, said Buhari was the name of his father and that Joe deliberately gave his dog that name to taunt him and the rest of the Hausa residents in the area. But we are still wondering if it is now an offence to give your pet animal the name of your choice. Even if you say it is an offence, at least we have all sat together to resolve the whole issue and the man himself has shown some sense of responsibility by saying he was sorry if his action offended anybody. So, why is he still being harassed till now? This is not fair. His persecution is affecting his pregnant wife and little daughter who have both been very sick as a result of the problem,” he said.

When our correspondent visited the public toilet Kalilu operates which is just a few yards away from Omikunle Street where the 41-year-old detained trader lives with his family, the accuser was said to have also gone to the police command at the state capital. The men at the place refused to speak on the matter, asking our correspondent to come back later in the evening. They also refused to supply the mobile phone number of their kinsman.

An officer at the Sango Police Station who did not disclose his name but is privy to details of the matter, told our correspondent that the accused was arrested because his action was intended at causing public unrest in the community which has a large Igbo and Hausa presence.

According to him, Chinakwe not only named his dog Buhari but also inscribed it on its body and usually walked with it into the midst of the Hausas, a claim the 41-year-old and his relatives denied vehemently.

Acting spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, revealed on Friday that the accused would be arraigned at the Sango Magistrate Court on Monday.

“The man is here with us at Eleweran, he is being detained at the Criminal Investigation Department. The charge will be prepared and he will be arraigned at Sango Magistrate Court on Monday. What he did was highly provocative, it can cause ethnic and religious crisis,” he said.

But human rights lawyer and former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja Branch, Lagos, Monday Ubani, told Saturday PUNCH that there is no such law in Nigeria’s criminal code which states that it is an offence to give your pets a name of your choice.

Though Ubani concedes that this particular case is novel as far as law was concerned in Nigeria to the best of his knowledge, he said the police cannot arrest and detain a person except they are able to prove that the individual’s action is indeed capable of causing breach of public peace.

He however, wonders why the accused would name a dog after his neighbour’s father as alleged because according to him it could be a bit offensive even though it was not a crime.

Rio 2016: Australian swimmers banned from closing ceremony

Australian swimmers Josh Palmer and Emma McKeon have been banned from attending the closing ceremony at the Olympics after being hit with a curfew following a night out in Rio.

Palmer claimed he was forced to withdraw money at gunpoint in Copacabana before he was found looking disorientated by two businessmen, having lost his phone and wallet.

McKeon, who won four medals at the Games including a gold, was also out celebrating her success on Tuesday and the duo have been disciplined.

Australia's Chef de Mission Kitty Chiller said: "Two of our swimmers, being Josh Palmer and Emma McKeon, to varying degrees, breached our safety and security protocol, which is in place for entire team to make sure that we bring home all our athletes safe.

"Both of those athletes breached the protocol, we've considered the ramifications of that and imposed a curfew on those two athletes from 8pm to 8am. They will not be going to the closing ceremony, they are only allowed to travel to official sporting events during the day.

"Our swimming team management fully supports that sanction, they have also imposed a 2am curfew now on all swimmers during the Games.

"It's not a punishment, it's us ensuring that the safety and security of all our team members remains paramount. This could have ended up a lot worse and I do not want any athlete to put themselves in a position, we know what goes on it Copacabana

"I do not want to have to call up a parent and tell them their child has been robbed, mugged or anything worse."

McKeon tweeted: "To clarify, I've followed AOC safety protocol in not travelling to village alone. My error was not texting my team manager. #noclosingforme."

N’ Delta Avengers: S’South govs aware of Jonathan’s complicity –FG official

The revelation that former President Goodluck Jonathan or some people sympathetic to him are behind the spate of bombings being witnessed in the Niger Delta was first made at a meeting inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Saturday PUNCH has learnt.

There have been media reports that the Presidency is in possession of security report allegedly linking Jonathan to the formation and activities of the Niger Delta Avengers.

The intelligence report was said to have confirmed that oil installations were mined before the May 29, 2015 handover to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Although Jonathan had denied the allegation twice, a top government official, who spoke with our correspondent on Friday, confirmed that such report is currently available.

The source said the revelation was first made by “those who should know” at a meeting held in the seat of power some months back.

He said the meeting was attended by some leaders from the South South, including state governors from the region.

The meeting was called as part of efforts aimed at resolving the crisis.

The source said, “You know that leaders from the region, including the governors are also affected by the violence in the region.

“The situation is affecting their revenue and they cannot meet many of their obligations. So, they were also interested in finding a lasting solution to the matter.

“It was in one of such meetings called to find a solution that that revelation was made. It was confirmed that there was indeed Plan B and that those who held the view that Jonathan must continue as President by all means were shocked that he conceded victory to Buhari.”

The source, however, said only security agencies would be able to exonerate Jonathan at the end of the day.

When asked if Buhari had indeed directed security agencies to investigate Jonathan, the source said, “The President does not have to give such order before security agencies will know that with the allegations becoming more pronounced, especially from MEND, they need to investigate.

“For a fact, this President will not stop security agencies from investigating anybody, no matter how highly placed.

“It is also in the interest of the former President that the matter is thoroughly investigated. It is also in his interest to come out clean on the matter.

“We need to know whether he is personally involved in the plan or whether it was those sympathetic to him that hatched the plan.”

But the Rivers State Governor, Mr. NyesomWike, in a telephone interview with our correspondent denied that such revelation was made at a meeting of South South leaders.

Describing the allegation as a “wicked lie”, Wike said, “There is no truth in that allegation. Those behind the allegation are suffering from acute malaria.

“Those who are spreading such a huge allegation against the former President will never know peace. They are liars.”

Also, the former President had in a statement on Thursday by his Media Aide, Ikechukwu Eze, denied the allegation, saying Jonathan’s enemies were jealous of his rising profile.

Usain Bolt caps Olympic career with perfect ninth gold medal

Usain Bolt leaves one of the greatest Olympic legacies. (AP)

It ended like it was supposed to, with another gold medal, another breathtaking run, another reminder that Usain Bolt isn’t just the fastest man ever but one capable of summoning his otherworldly skill at the most appropriate time. There are great athletes, and there are great competitors, and there are the rarest breeds, of which Bolt is one, who manage to marry the two. They’re the ones that make history.

And so it went Friday night at the Rio Games, where Bolt left his final imprint on the Olympics in typical fashion. The 4×100-meter relay went off at 10:43 p.m. local time, and 37.27 seconds later, he crossed the finish line to propel Jamaica to its third consecutive gold in the race. Bolt anchored all three, and with his gold medals in the 100- and 200-meter dashes this week, he hit his beloved triple-triple: three golds in three consecutive Olympics.

Nine gold medals. It is staggering for a sprinter, but then Bolt isn’t just a sprinter. He’s a force of nature, arguably the greatest Olympian of all time, and with Asafa Powell, Yohan Blake and Nickel Ashmeade, he locked down his nine-for-nine run ahead of silver medalist Japan, which ran a 37.60. The United States team ran a 37.62 but was disqualified, leaving Canada with the bronze in 37.64 seconds.

“I just really want this one to make it nine because I like them in threes,” Bolt said Thursday night after he won the 200, and as much as he’s fond of prime numbers, what he really wanted was back-to-back-to-back perfect Olympics. His one stumble at the Games came when he was 17, raw as an oyster, and didn’t get out of qualifying.

Once he started to take his training seriously, Bolt grew into something beyond his wildest expectations: holder of multiple world records, master of his domain and winner of medal after Olympic gold medal. He said he will not run in 2020 during the Tokyo Games, that he has achieved all he can.

“I’ve put the sport on a different level,” Bolt said. “I’ve put it on a pedestal.”

If this really was the end, the final Olympic race for Usain Bolt, he leaves behind an unparalleled three-Games run as well as an enormous vacuum. Bolt likes to say, “The only thing that matters is the gold medal,” but he knows that isn’t true. Sometimes it matters how you win it, and on Friday night, he did it in a fashion as spectacular as ever.
