More armed police to patrol at Wimbledon

Armed police will be on duty at Wimbledon
An increased number of armed police will be on duty at Wimbledon this year following terrorist attacks in Paris last November.

The Metropolitan Police will provide both undercover and armed officers, while the All England Club will have more staff on duty checking bags.

Armed police will be deployed both inside and outside of the grounds.

A Met spokesman told Sky Sports News HQ: "A range of tactics will be put in place, some highly visible and some that the public will not notice and that includes a dedicated deployment of armed officers."

A spokesman for the All England Club said: "As you would expect, the security and safety of our visitors is an overriding concern and our security level remains 'severe'.

"Procedures will include extensive searches of the person, bags and vehicles on entry to the grounds and show courts."

The heightened security comes as organisers of the Tour de France announced 23,000 officers will be in force this year.

For the first time the National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN) - France's elite counter-terroism unit - will be ready to respond to any terror-related incidents.

There has been a greater police presence at sporting events following the terror attacks at the Stade de France in Paris last November.

US Open win is big monkey off my back, says Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson credited his support network for helping him to secure his first major championship at the US Open, a victory he described as "a huge monkey off my back".

With a possible infringement hanging over his head and the prospect of another near-miss at a major championship during the final round, Johnson secured a three-shot victory at Oakmont.

The 31-year-old had come close to winning several major championships, including last year's US Open at Chambers Bay, and this year the expectation for him was at an all-time high.

He began the final round four shots behind leader Shane Lowry, but a one-under-par 69 was enough for the American to lift the trophy and leapfrog Rory McIlroy into third place in the world rankings.

"I've been in this situation time and time again, so I know what to expect. I know how to handle myself. For me to finally get it done in a major, it's a huge monkey off my back.

"I've worked so hard to get here. I've put myself in this position many times, and to get it done is definitely sweet.

"I had a lot of confidence in my game coming into this week. I've been driving it well. So coming into a golf course like this, especially where it's a huge emphasis on driving, to come out and drive it like I did is an advantage. It's probably one of my best weeks driving the ball.

"I couldn't be more excited, more happy, and more proud of myself, especially with the things that happened last year at the US Open on the 18th hole, you know, to come back this year and to get it done, it's definitely bitter sweet."

Having three-putted from 12 feet on the final hole at last year's US Open to lose the tournament to Jordan Spieth, Dustin had hoped for less drama this time around - but it was not to be.

He was informed on the 12th tee that he may incur a one-shot penalty for his ball moving on the 5th hole, despite an official agreeing at the time it was not an infringement of the rules.

The USGA told him footage would be reviewed on completion of the round to assess whether he was to be penalised. Despite hours of uncertainty, Johnson produced a solid display which included a 10-foot putt for par on the 16th.

"Watching the video, I still don't think I caused the ball to move, but the USGA, they said I did. So with the rule - I don't even understand the rule, but I got a penalty. That's it.

"But at the end of the day, it's ultimately up to the USGA to make the final decision, and just fortunately, it didn't affect the outcome."

Dustin credits the support system around him for becoming a stronger person and finally adding a major title to his collection.

"I've got a great support system with Paulina, my son Tatum, my family, my team that's around me. So it's been a great road. I'm definitely a stronger person coming out the other side.

"I felt like I've handled myself very well in the past in the majors, I just didn't quite get over that hump. Today, I finally did."

One of his closest allies is his brother Austin, who has been Johnson's caddie for nearly three years.

"My brother being on the bag, he's my best friend. So to have somebody you really enjoy being out there with you, it definitely makes things a lot better. To have my brother out there with me, it's been awesome. It's just getting better."

Lavezzi to miss Copa America final after fracturing elbow

A fractured elbow suffered in the semifinals against the United States means the Argentina forward will not take part in the 2016 Copa America Centenario final.

Ezequiel Lavezzi will miss the Copa America Centenario final after it was confirmed he suffered an elbow fracture in Argentina's semifinal win over the United States on Tuesday.

Lavezzi - who scored the game's opener inside four minutes - was forced off in the second half of their 4-0 win against the USA after landing awkwardly when he tumbled over an advertising board in Houston.

The Hebei China Fortune forward leapt up for a header but was too close to the hoardings, appearing to land badly on his neck.

After being taken away on a stretcher, medics confirmed the 31-year-old suffered a radial fracture in his left elbow.

The injury will need surgery, ruling Lavezzi out of the Copa America final on Sunday.

Argentina will be hoping to end its 23-year wait for a major trophy in the decider, where it will meet either defending champion Chile or Colombia.

CECH SETS UNWANTED EURO RECORD AS CZECH REPUBLIC CRASH OUT AT GROUP STAGE

The Arsenal goalkeeper conceded twice as Czech Republic fell to a loss against Turkey, and it has set a new tournament record
Czech Republic have crashed out at the group stage, and Petr Cech exits the tournament with a record he doesn’t want.
Tuesday’s defeat to Turkey has left them bottom of Group D, having secured just a point against Croatia in their three group games.
But for Cech, the 2-0 defeat means that the Arsenal goalkeeper has conceded 21 goals in the European Championship - the most of any goalkeeper in the tournament’s history.

The day Tite became Brazil boss

The former Corinthians man was finally unveiled as the new Selecao boss on Monday and Brasil Global Tour's Raisa Simplicio was in Rio to gauge those vital first impressions

An hour later than originally planned, Tite arrived at CBF headquarters in Rio de Janeiro on Monday afternoon to finally presented as new coach of Brazil.

But then Tite’s history with the CBF up to now has left plenty waiting around.

The former Corinthians coach headed straight to the Selecao’s museum for a quick recap of the history into which he is stepping.

A particular highlight of the tour, he said later that afternoon, was a trip back to 1970 when Pele and co. wowed the globe to earn Brazil their third world title.

It was nostalgic moment for the 55-year-old, evoking the childhood joy of watching perhaps the greatest team in the game’s history conquer the world.

The new coach also spoke of the “magic” of 1982, when the likes of Socrates and Zico didn’t manage to win the title but reclaimed the hearts of football fans across the world, highlighting the talent and swagger with which Tele Santana’s mythical side strutted their way through Spain.

Stepping foot in front of the watching media as Brazil coach for the first time, Tite embraced his new boss Marco Polo Del Nero in a very public display that there was no lingering animosity between the two. Tite was home.

Del Nero also paid tribute to Dona Ivone, Tite’s mother, who is a fervent supporter of the Selecao and, of course, their new boss.

Tite had only told her of his new role that day, to which reacted with great excitement, he said.

During the press conference, the new man at the helm carefully shimmied his way around some tricky questions regarding his new boss, deflecting probing enquiries into a reportedly strained relationship.

And unlike its predecessor, Dunga, Tite was patient and polite in all of his answers, happily explaining his views on every question he was asked.

He labelled his appointment ‘a little boy's dream come true’, explaining it was an offer he could not refuse and admitting he had been waiting for the opportunity since World Cup 2014

TIte went on to reveal that he did not sleep the night before his trip to Rio, spending a restless night recalling his career to date and admitting his legs were trembling when he arrived at the home of the Confederation late that afternoon.

His wide-eyed trip through Brazilian football’s great past reminded him of the task with which he is now faced.

The decision not to lead the team at the Rio Olmpics in August, as Dunga had been scheduled to, was explained by his desire to focus on what he now sees as the biggest task ahead: ensuring Brazil do not fail to qualify for a World Cup for the first time in competition’s history.

Tite could not hide his delight at the crowning achievement of his 25 years in coaching. And, as always, he wasted no time in getting to work. On Tuesday he travelled to USA to watch his new side's upcoming World Cup qualifying opponents Colombia.

Both during and immediately after his first press conference as Brazil coach, there was a curious feeling around the press corps.

For the first time since World Cup 2014, they were unanimous in their respect and admiration for a Brazilian coach who is widely regarded as by far the most impressive of his generation.

Tite begins his new role with the press onside; with a genuine feeling of hope that the smiles will soon return to a nation which has been defined by its unprecedented success in football.

United States 0-4 Argentina: Messi leads Argentina to Copa final

Lionel Messi surpassed Gabriel Batistuta as Argentina's all-time goal scorer in Tuesday's Copa America Centenario semifinal in Houston.

Argentina advanced to the Copa America final for the second consecutive year thanks a comfortable 4-0 win over the United States as captain Lionel Messi became the nation's all-time leading goal scorer on Tuesday.

Runner-up to Chile last year, 14-time South American champion Argentina reached the decider of the centenary tournament on a night that Messi made more history with his record-breaking 55th international goal.

Messi's inch-perfect free kick in the 32nd minute saw him surpass Gabriel Batistuta in stunning fashion in Houston.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner had earlier teed up Ezequiel Lavezzi - who was forced from the field in the second half after tumbling over an advertising board - for the game's opening goal in the third minute, while in-form striker Gonzalo Higuain completed the rout with a second-half brace at NRG Stadium.

Argentina - seeking to end a 23-year wait for a major trophy - will now face either defending champion Chile or Colombia in the final.

The USA was without three first-team regulars, with Jermaine Jones, Bobby Wood and Alejandro Bedoya suspended for the final-four clash. The trio's absence meant Graham Zusi, Chris Wondolowski and Kyle Beckerman were called upon, while DeAndre Yedlin also returned to the lineup.

Argentina also had one changed forced upon the team as the suspended Nicolas Gaitan was replaced by Lavezzi in the starting XI.

There were questions asked of Argentina coach Gerardo Martino and his decision to hand Lavezzi just his second start of the tournament, but the China-based forward repaid the faith just three minutes into the match.

Jurgen Klinsmann and Co. insisted they would not give Messi any special attention, something they quickly had to revise as the five-time Ballon d'Or winner played a delightful lofted through-ball to Lavezzi, who guided his effort over the onrushing Brad Guzan as the USA attempted to clear its lines.

Messi could not be stopped from that point, dictating the play and helping Argentina dominate possession as USA was forced to watch on in awe, ending the first half without a shot.

After John Brooks made a last-ditch tackle to deny Gonzalo Higuain, Messi stepped up and executed an inch-perfect free kick just past the half-hour mark.

In another moment of brilliance as fans watched on in anticipation, Messi curled a set piece across Guzan and in under the crossbar for his fifth goal of the tournament.

The USA made a change at the break, with teenage sensation Christian Pulisic coming on in place of Wondolowski.

But Argentina continued where it left off in the second half, Higuain springing the offside trap and tucking home his own rebound having initially been denied by Guzan.

Despite the best efforts of captain Michael Bradley to inspire USA, the CONCACAF nation barely threatened as Argentina cruised.

Argentina experienced a heart-in-mouth moment after Lavezzi tumbled over an advertising board following the hour, with medics immediately signalling for an ambulance having appeared to land on his neck. The Heibei China Fortune star, however, was able to get up on his feet, but was left clutching his arm.

Business went on as usual for Argentina and Higuain completed the scoring four minutes from time for his 31st international goal, after Messi squared the ball across the six-yard box for a simple tap-in.

Euro 2016: Hungary fined after crowd disturbances against Iceland

Uefa has fined Hungary 65,000 euros (£50,000) over the behaviour of their supporters at Euro 2016.

The Hungarian Football Federation was charged with crowd disturbances, setting off fireworks and throwing objects during the draw with Iceland.

Hungary top Group F and face Portugal on Wednesday in their final group game.

Croatia were previously fined 100,000 euros (£77,000) and Russia 150,000 euros (£115,000) after crowd trouble at the tournament in France.

Eight countries, a third of the teams, have now been charged by Uefa over crowd disturbances with Albania, Romania, Turkey, Belgium, and Portugal also facing disciplinary action.

Croatia's match against the Czech Republic on Friday was halted when flares were thrown onto the pitch.

In addition to the fine the Croatia Football Federation has also been banned from selling tickets to fans identified as "hooligans".

Russia were given a suspended disqualification after violent scenes during their opening match against England on 11 June.

They were eliminated from the tournament after losing 3-0 to Wales on Monday and finishing bottom of Group B.

India beat Zimbabwe by 10 wickets to level T20 series in Harare

India recorded their first 10-wicket win in T20 cricket to level their three-match series with Zimbabwe in Harare.

Barinda Sran was the star for India with the ball, taking 4-10 in his four overs, as they restricted Zimbabwe to just 99-9 in their 20 overs.

Peter Moor top-scored for the hosts with 31 before he was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah, one of three wickets for the medium-pacer.

In reply, the Indian openers were rarely troubled early on and eased their way to 37 without loss at the end of the powerplay.

Mandeep Singh should have been on his way soon after though as he hauled out off the bowling of Chamu Chibhabha, only for a seemingly simple catch to be parried over the rope for six.

India never looked back from there on though, Lokesh Rahul (47no) smashing two maximums before Mandeep (52no) cut the ball away to the boundary to simultaneously seal the win and bring up his half-century with 41 balls to spare.

Zimbabwe will look to bounce back in the series decider on Wednesday, also in Harare.

Blanc set to leave Paris Saint-Germain

The Frenchman has enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at Parc des Princes but has paid the price for failing to win the Champions League, with Sevilla boss Unai Emery set to replace him

Laurent Blanc's departure from Paris Saint-Germain will be completed in the next few days, his agent has confirmed.

Goal understands the French champions are hoping to announce the appointment of Sevilla boss Unai Emery as Blanc's successor on Thursday.

Blanc has guided PSG to the domestic treble in the last two seasons but has paid the price for failing to deliver the Champions League, with the club bowing out at the quarter-final stage in each of his three terms in charge.

PSG won Ligue 1 at a canter in 2015-16, along with the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue, but were beaten 3-2 on aggregate by Manchester City in the Champions League last eight.

“Before the end of the week, PSG and Laurent Blanc will be parted,” Blanc's representative, Jean Pierre Bernes, told French radio station Europe 1.

Blanc joined PSG in 2013 and has won three successive Ligue 1 titles, along with two Coupe de France trophies, three Coupe de la Ligues and three Trophee des Champions crowns.

The former Bordeaux boss became the first coach to lead a club to a major domestic treble in French football history in 2014/15 and went on to repeat the feat this season.

Blanc also won the 2015 Ligue 1 Manager of the Year award in France but is now set to depart the club, with Emery in pole position to be confirmed as his replacement.

Emery has seen his stock rise significantly in recent years after guiding Sevilla to three Europa League titles on the spin since his appointment at the club in 2013.

Wayne Rooney rested as Roy Hodgson changes six for England's final group game with Slovakia

Wayne Rooney has been rested for the final group game against Slovakia
England captain Wayne Rooney has been rested as one of six changes by Roy Hodgson for the final Euro 2016 Group B match against Slovakia.

The Manchester United skipper has been replaced in midfield by Arsenal's Jack Wilshere, who came off the bench to replace him in the opening match against Russia.

Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge, who scored the goals that saw England come from behind to beat Wales in game two, both start over Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling - the pair they replaced in that 2-1 victory.

Full-backs Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand come in for Tottenham pair Kyle Walker and Danny Rose, while Jordan Henderson makes his first appearance of the tournament in place of Dele Alli.

Sky sources reported earlier on Monday that Leicester star Vardy was set to start for the first time in the competition after beginning on the bench against Russia and Wales.

England boss Hodgson told reporters on Sunday that he still had a decision to make about who would start up front following Vardy's and Sturridge's goal-scoring heroics.

England are assured of a top-three finish in Group B and know a win against Slovakia will guarantee them top spot and a potentially easier tie in the last 16 of the tournament.

England team to play Slovakia: Hart, Clyne, Smalling, Cahill, Bertrand, Dier, Henderson, Wilshere, Sturridge, Lallana, Vardy.

CROATIA FINED €100,000 & THREATENED WITH TICKET-SELLING RESTRICTIONS

Crowd trouble marred the country's draw with the Czech Republic in Saint-Etienne on Friday and the governing body have now hit the country with a significant punishment
Croatia have been fined €100,000 and told they will be banned from selling tickets to fans identified as hooligans if there is any further trouble during Euro 2016.
The country's match against Czech Republic in Saint-Etienne on Friday – which finished in a 2-2 draw – was marred by trouble involving a section of their support.
Croatian players had to call for calm when a volley of flares rained down on the pitch and halted play in the second half as part of a co-ordinated protest against the Croatian Football Federation (HNS).
The demonstration caused some other Croatia fans to confront those who were protesting, with the HNS later thanking supporters who had tried to stop the trouble as well as calling for authorities to do more to help them.
Following a meeting in Paris on Monday, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body imposed sanctions on Croatia for the charges of crowd disturbances, use of fireworks, throwing of missiles and racist behaviour.
As well as the fine, Croatia have received a ban from selling tickets to "certain fans identified by the HNS and Croatian authorities as hooligans" that is deferred under a probationary period until the end of the Euros.
Croatia have the opportunity to appeal the verdict.

Ibrahimovic 'wants revenge' on Guardiola, says Mino Raiola

Zlatan Ibrahimovic wants to take revenge on Pep Guardiola, according to the Sweden striker's agent Mino Raiola.

The 34-year-old is widely expected to join Manchester United on a free transfer, with his Paris Saint-Germain contract set to expire after four prolific years with the French champions.

Ibrahimovic - who scored 50 goals for PSG in 2015-16 - and Guardiola are on poor terms after their relationship broke down during the striker's one-year spell under the head coach at Barcleona in 2009-10.

Guardiola is taking over at Manchester City for the new season and, with Ibrahimovic set for United, two of football's biggest names are primed to rekindle their rivalry in the Premier League.

Raiola told Marca: "I think he wants revenge on Guardiola, although he does not live for it because you shouldn't have two graves - one for him and one for the enemy.

"It seems destiny wants to see that meeting take place. One option is to go to the Premier League but for as long as Sweden continue in the Euros there will be no solution.

"You learn more from defeats than you do from victories and Zlatan learned a lot from what happened with Guardiola.

"As a person, I don't like him either.  Zlatan admits he is a great coach and I can think it, but I refuse to admit it."

Sergio Perez: Late first stop key for 'incredible' Baku podium

Sergio Perez says a late first pit stop helped him wrap up an "incredible" second podium in three races at the Grand Prix of Europe.

Perez qualified second but started seventh after a gearbox change made after a crash in FP3. The Mexican driver fought back to third through the race, eventually catching and passing Kimi Raikkonen in the closing stages, though the Finnish driver already had a five-second penalty to serve after the race.

"I knew that the podium was possible today, but it was very hard," Perez said. "It was very hard work to get it. We really did an incredible first lap to get around the Williams and the Toro Rosso.

"Then the first stint was really difficult, the first laps, with the graining and just, let's say, not panicking and not stopping when the graining occurred, especially when Kimi and some people behind stopped. We decided to stay longer, until lap 15, and that was one of the keys to my race."

"Obviously pitting early we went onto the one-stop and as soon as I left the pits I was under pressure from Lewis. I had to push straight away and the warm-up with the soft for me was a bit difficult. So, those first laps [after the stop] were really tricky. I had to keep Lewis behind and then I managed to open a gap and was behind Kimi."

Perez said it was "unbelievable" a Safety Car was not required at any point during the weekend on a circuit which had caught out many of the drivers during the weekend.

"I was looking after the tyres and thinking there was going to be a safety car at some point. It is unbelievable it didn't happen. I was looking after my tyres to make sure I made it to the end and I think Kimi was very strong with the pace he had.

"I knew he had a penalty and I got close to him and at the end I saw the opportunity that it was safe enough to go ahead and take it and finish in P3 [on the road]. It is well deserved for the team because they have done an amazing job - all my boys to fix the car from yesterday, so very pleased. It is only the eighth race and we have done two podiums so far. It has been incredible."

Mercedes explain Lewis Hamilton's power problems in European GP

Mercedes have explained their failure to pre-set the correct energy deployment settings on their cars caused Lewis Hamilton's problems in the European GP.

Hamilton's fightback from 10th on the grid was compromised by a loss of hybrid power during the 51-lap race. The problem affected both the Briton and race-winning team-mate Nico Rosberg's W07s, but Hamilton's took longer to rectify. He finished fifth to drop 24 points behind in the championship battle.

Team boss Toto Wolff said: "We had a configuration setting problem with engine modes which occurred on both cars.

"By regulation we are not allowed to tell the driver [what to do], they needed to figure it out themselves.

"Nico was in the more fortunate situation that he did a switch change just before which kind of led him on the right path, so within half a lap he went back into the right mode.

"Lewis, because he didn't have that right path, it took him a while to figure it out - 12 laps - and this for sure it affected his race."

Mercedes' initial data suggested Hamilton lost 0.2 seconds per lap although Wolff acknowledged "it must have felt much more because the engine was de-rating between turns two and three where you expect the biggest boost".

De-rating happens when there is a lower than maximum electrical deployment from the hybrid part of the power unit.

"The settings were wrong because we had a messy Friday and couldn't configure it in the way we should have done," Wolff added. "So it was pre-set in the wrong way and it happened a little bit earlier on Lewis's car than Nico's car. I think it was three laps earlier."

An increasingly agitated Hamilton was heard urging his engineer over the radio to give him some guidance as to what settings on his steering wheel to change, but the clampdown on pit-to-car communications for 2016 barred the team from telling him.

Wolff confirmed Mercedes sought guidance from the FIA as to what they could tell Hamilton, while the Austrian also absolved the world champion of blame for not finding the correct setting on his wheel sooner.

European GP race report

"Energy deployment is a very complicated tool and there are ways to optimise it to harvest the energy at the right time and deploy the energy at the right time - and that configuration was wrong," the Mercedes chief said.

"It was just one switch change, but you need to find that out and you are [going] 350kph in the car and you are playing around with the steering wheel it's a complex matter.

He added: "I don't think it's down to [Lewis not having done his] homework."
