Efe Ambrose invited for Nigeria friendlies

Ambrose invited for Nigeria games
Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh has invited Celtic defender Efe Ambrose for the international friendlies against DR Congo and Cameroon in Belgium owing to injury suffered by Kenneth Omeruo.

This was disclosed by the Nigeria Football Federation via their Twitter handle.

Kasimpasa’s Omeruo was replaced by Vasil Bozhikov with nine minutes to regulation time in their 1-1 draw versus Rizespor in a Turkish topflight encounter on Monday.

This will be first time Efe would be invited to the senior national team since the country’s failure to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations staged in Equatorial Guinea.

13,000 capacity multi-purpose Stadium, Stade Charles Tondreau – home of former Belgian league side R.A.E.C Mons will be the battle ground when the Super Eagles slug it out with DR Congo on October 8.

Three days later, Sunday Oliseh’s men will head for Denderleeuw where they face arch rivals Cameroon at the 12,000 capacity Stade Van Roy.

Nigeria's Afcon 2015 qualifiers was sabotaged, claims a former team coordinator

Months after being relieved of his post, the immediate past coordinator of the Super Eagles, Emmanuel Attah has said that sabotage was responsible for the team not qualifying for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations held in Equatorial Guinea.

The Eagles returned as African champions from the 2013 tournament staged in South Africa but failed to qualify for this year's event after they finished behind South Africa and DR Congo in the qualifying series, with Attah insisting the team's failure was not ordinary.

The former chairman of the FCT FA cited the fallout from the team's success in South Africa with Stephen Keshi's resignation as part of the reasons aside the leadership crisis which attracted several threats of a ban from Fifa.

"l know, I believe and I stand by what I am about to say. Sabotage played a prominent role in our not qualifying for the 2015 AFCON in Equatorial Guinea. We were sabotaged," Attah told DailyTrust .

"Presently I am writing a book on the details of what really transpired. If you rewind your memory to that match in Calabar against Congo, the officiating was quite funny. Very, very funny.

"Later a friend in Ghana where the referees came from confided in me that 'that was what your country wanted'. The details will come. Apart from that when we were about leaving to play South Africa, I played on the psyche of a highly placed member of the then NFF.

"I asked him why did you people abandon us? We used to work together. And he said Riggogo, for that is how he calls me, and I quote him 'I think you people think you can play alone without us, make una go win make we see '.

"I was shocked but I told him, he is not God. Eventually we got a draw against South Africa. The next game was against Sudan in Nigeria and we would have lost, if not by the grace of God," he continued.

"I will trace the problem to the post Nations Cup victory and like I said some of us might have made some mistakes. After the Nations Cup victory, Keshi resigned and we all heard the reasons he gave for his resignation. The manner he went about it did not go down well with the then NFF president [Aminu] Maigari who felt slighted.

"Again, when the team was hosted by the Presidency, either by omission or commission, the NFF with all its contributions was not even mentioned and the backroom staff were left out of the honours list. This was a serious over sight, if it was and that also added to the problems in the team.

"Thirdly we played the qualifiers during the crisis in the NFF and that affected the team. We were not sure whether or not FIFA would ban Nigeria over the election issues.

"Psychologically, the players were not ready for our opening match against Congo and we lost the game in Calabar and that was not good for the team. It affected our subsequent matches," he concluded.

Mihajlovic will make AC Milan great again, says Alessandro Nesta

Nesta: Mihajlovic will make AC Milan great again
Alessandro Nesta is confident AC Milan will soon return to the top of Italian football under the guidance of coach Sinisa Mihajlovic.

The San Siro side have been struggling for consistency so far this season and currently sit 11th in the Serie A table with nine points from six games.

Nevertheless Nesta, who won two league titles and two Champions Leagues during his 10 years at the club, has little doubt they will come good once the team builds some cohesion.

"Sinisa knows how to play football and Milan are a great opportunity for him," Nesta was quoted as saying on the official Milan website.

"Milan have changed a lot this year and they need to sort themselves out a little during the match and find some consistency.

"But I think the foundations are good and so are the players. They will be back at the top soon."

Nesta wore the Milan jersey between 2002 and 2012 and he has nothing but fond memories of his time with the Rossoneri.

"I have so many wonderful memories of my time at Milan. It was a long time and a very successful period," he said.

The Confederation of African Football has fined the sum of five thousand dollars for fans misconduct during the 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Chad in Kaduna.

Goals from Odion Ighalo and Gbolahan Salami handed the Super Eagles a valuable home win and after the game, fans invaded the pitch to celebrate Nigeria’s victory.

The Super Eagles who are second in Group G of the Gabon 2017 qualifying series face Egypt in their next game.

9jaNews:We have met our targets, says NFF president Amaju Pinnick

President of Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick has boasted that his administration has successfully met its set objectives within a year of its tenure and believes that there is room for improvement in coming years.

He confessed that it has been tasking and challenging in the 12 months of his tenure owing to crises that engulfed the football house and took about nine months  before they were finally resolved.

“I am very happy now that Nigerian football is now united and is one big family,” Pinnick told Goal.

“The referees have brought their experience from the capacity building course to bear on the league and our league is now a destination place and people now go to stadiums with their family to watch matches. Clubs like [Kano] Pillars have lost and drawn at home, same with Sunshine Stars.

"It has been challenging and tasking and I make bold to say that we are on line to meeting all we promised to do. We are taking a cue from Germany and England who put up a 12-year plan to develop their football and it has paid off. Football is not all about winning all the time; you have to have a structure.”

"You have to have a decent secretariat, personnel and finance. These are structures we are taking about. You have to have personality to get sponsors. So we are almost there and I am satisfied with what we have done so far," he continued.

On the crisis that followed his election, he revealed how he was able to quench the imbroglio that almost blew his administration apart.

“I called most of the stakeholders in the game to rub minds on issues and they have been very supportive so far,” he added.

“When I was consulting I called ex-general secretaries of the federation, ex-chairmen to bring their opinions.

“I talked to Amanze Uchegbulam and he gave me a lot of advice. I also talked with Sani Toro, Tijani Yussuf and Fanny Amun to mention some of these great administrators.

“The truth is that if you don’t consult you won’t know that your problem is not as big as you perceived it,” he concluded.

MotoGP champion Marc Marquez undergoes surgery

MotoGP champion Marc Marquez has undergone hand surgery but is expected to be fit to race in Japan later this month.

Marquez fractured a finger on his left hand when he fell off a mountain bike while riding on the outskirts of his hometown Cervera in Spain.

The 22-year-old was operated on by Dr. Xavier Mir on Wednesday and the Spaniard's team Honda are confident he will be fit for Motegi on October 11.

Marquez, who required surgery in April after sustaining a similar injury in a training accident while riding a dirt bike, crashed out for the fifth time this season at Aragon on Sunday and lies third in the standings behind leader Valentino Rossi.

Tennis:Disappointed Serena Williams may not play again in 2015, says coach

Everyone expected Serena Williams to win this year’s US Open. She didn’t. She lost to Roberta Vinci in the semi-finals, and missed the chance to become only the fourth woman in history to complete a calendar slam. And now her coach has said the world No 1 may not play again this year, so disappointed is she with her loss at Flushing Meadows.

Patrick Mouratoglou, who has coached Williams since 2012, questioned whether she was in the right frame of mind, and told ESPN W: “When Serena lost in Toronto [in August], she was very disappointed, but we went back to practice the morning after because she wanted to win the US Open.

“But after this year and the three grand slams [she won in 2015], the question is how high her motivation is to play those tournaments. I don’t think she should play if the motivation is not really high.”

Williams is scheduled to play in the China Open next week and the WTA Finals in Singapore at the end of October, but she hasn’t competed since that defeat in New York, described by some as the biggest upset in the history of women’s tennis. The unseeded Vinci had never previously gone beyond the quarter-finals of a major tournament, and Williams had won the previous four grand slams, stretching back to last year’s US Open.

But the Italian Vinci stopped Williams in her tracks, winning 2-6 6-4 6-4 in exactly two hours, and shredded the joy of Serena Williams fans around the world.

Mouratoglou said Williams felt the weight of her own expectations against the veteran Vinci.

“Because she lost [the semi-final] match, she says to me her season is not good,” he said. “But I like that because it’s just about having high expectations and that’s what champions have and I think the same way.

“I don’t think the strategy was wrong, but I think she was not in the right mindset that day for her tennis, which happens, but usually I find a way to make her be better on those days,” he said. “And on this day, I did not.”

Williams, who turned 34 last Saturday, has 21 grand slam titles to her name, one behind Steffi Graf and three short of Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24. Despite losing in the last four in New York, Williams already has clinched the year-end No 1 ranking, and is the hot favourite to retain her WTA Finals title, if she plays.

Basketball:Bulls star Derrick Rose has been injured on day one of practice

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose will require surgery after he was accidentally elbowed during the team's first day of practice on Tuesday and suffered a facial fracture.

The 26-year-old guard will have an operation to repair a broken orbital bone and the Bulls will determine a timetable for his return after he has had the surgery.

First-year coach Fred Hoiberg said: "Derrick took an elbow to the face. He took a good, hard elbow."

Rose was the NBA's MVP for the 2010-11 season but his career since then has been hampered by a string of injuries.

He missed the whole of the 2012-13 season after tearing his left ACL and then tore the medial meniscus in his right knee in November 2013, forcing him to the sidelines for the remainder of that campaign.

Rose also missed an extended period of time last season due to another knee injury.

The Bulls parted company with coach Tom Thibodeau following their second round playoff loss in May and new man Hoiberg immediately has a new Rose injury to concern him.
