ICC World Twenty20: Jason Roy rampage crushes New Zealand in semi-final

Jason Roy blitzed 78 off 43 balls to power England to a crushing seven-wicket win over New Zealand and a place in their second World Twenty20 final.

Roy crashed 11 fours and two sixes in a phenomenally powerful innings to dominate a first-wicket stand of 82 in 8.2 overs with Alex Hales (20), before Jos Buttler (32no off 17) crunched successive straight sixes off spinner Ish Sodhi, then another off Mitchell Santner to propel England past their victory target of 154 with 17 balls to spare.

The opener's maiden T20I fifty, which came up in a flash off 26 balls, was the second fastest fifty by an Englishman in a World T20 - just one ball slower than Eoin Morgan's half-century in 2012 against the West Indies.

It followed an exceptional display of death bowling from Ben Stokes (3-26) and Chris Jordan (1-24) that helped restrict previously-unbeaten New Zealand to 64-7 from the last 10 overs of their innings, meaning they finished on a below-par 153-8.

England will face either West Indies or hosts India in Sunday's final at Eden Gardens - their first final appearance since the title-winning campaign of 2010.

Ben Stokes and Chris Jordan did Eoin Morgan proud
New Zealand - yet to reach a World Twenty20 final - flew out of the blocks as Martin Guptill pocketed two fours off David Willey's opening over only for the left-armer to hit back in his next, finding the edge of the opener's bat on the drive.

Adil Rashid dropped the toughest of chances around the corner offered by Kane Williamson (32) on two, off Liam Plunkett's first ball, and for eight overs it appeared it might be a costly miss.

New Zealand didn't hit a six until the eighth over, when Williamson went inside-out to strike Stokes over the off-side; Colin Munro (46) followed suit in the following over, reverse sweeping Rashid for a midwicket maximum - adding seven fours for good measure in a powerful 32-ball knock.

Kumar Sangakkara and Michael Atherton discuss England's semi-final win over New Zealand and the performance of Jason Roy.
At 92-1 just past the midway point, New Zealand seemed set for a colossal score but the innings began to unravel when Williamson skied Moeen Ali's third ball, the spinner running back to take a good catch.

Three overs later Munro chased a wide Liam Plunkett delivery, splicing it to third man, and Ross Taylor - who never settled - picked out Eoin Morgan in the covers.

That wicket and three runs came off Jordan's third over - the 17th of the innings - and he completed a fine set of four after Stokes had picked off Luke Ronchi and Anderson with successive full tosses in an 18th over costing just five.

Nasser Hussain called England's World T20 semi-final win over New Zealand the 'complete performance'.
In total New Zealand added just 20 runs in the final four overs of the innings, Mitchell Santer holing out before Stokes fielded off his own bowling to run out Mitchell McClenaghan off the final ball.

England nearly eclipsed that particular tally in the first over of their chase as Jason Roy plundered four boundaries off Anderson, throwing his hands at any width.

A crunching cut off Adam Milne helped swell the total to 23-0 off two and Alex Hales joined battle by pumping McClenaghan over long on for the first six of the innings.

The introduction of spin brought little respite for New Zealand - Roy powering Santner down the ground for four after the 50-run stand had come up off 26 balls, before tickling his eighth four of a pulsating innings to fine leg.

Jason Roy picked up the Man of the Match award after his 78 helped beat New Zealand in the first World T20 semi-final.
Hales, having survived a stumping chance on 19 off Grant Elliott, mowed Santner to long and England then endured a wobble as Eoin Morgan fell lbw first ball after Roy advanced but missed a straight one from Sodhi.

Roy's rampage, though, meant the required run-rate was barely six-an-over as Buttler and Joe Root (27no off 22) came together - both batsmen happy to deploy the reverse sweep to manoeuvre the field around and make England's progress a formality with Buttler in merciless mood.

Athletics:Jessica Ennis-Hill may retire from athletics after Rio 2016

Jessica Ennis-Hill won gold at last year's World Championships in Beijing
Jessica Ennis-Hill insists there is no chance of her continuing her career beyond the 2017 World Championships in London and may retire after Rio 2016.

The Olympic heptathlon champion is building up to the defence of her title in Rio de Janeiro and admits she might even call it a day after August's event in Brazil.

But the 30-year-old, who is recovering from an achilles injury which ruled her out of the indoor season, insists she is not looking beyond this summer's championships.

"I think at the moment I'm just focused on Rio and being the best prepared I can and going out there and seeing what I can do," she told Laureus.com.

"Then it's going to be a decision to make after Rio for me - whether I decide to retire after Rio or whether I decide I want to do one more year and go to the World Championships and retire after that.

"But I definitely won't be going on any longer than 2017."

The Sheffield-based athlete will head to Rio as the reigning world champion after her astonishing comeback victory in Beijing last summer when she took gold in only her second heptathlon since London 2012 and just 13 months after the birth of her son Reggie.

Despite that success, she maintains she will not be favourite to land another Olympic crown.

Ennis-Hill, whose Beijing success saw her nominated for the 2016 Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award, added: "People will obviously expect me to just keep performing at a high level and winning gold medals.

"Unfortunately it's not that easy. And this year is going to be more challenging just because of the level of competition. Everyone has stepped up their game.

"It's going to be tough and I think I'm definitely not the favourite. I think there's Brianne Theisen-Eaton (the Canadian who won pentathlon gold at the World Indoor Championships this month) and I think Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

"She had her disappointments last year and is going to want to come back and make amends for what happened in Beijing," Ennis-Hill said of her 23-year-old team-mate Johnson-Thompson, who finished in 28th place after failing to record a distance in the long jump.

Athletics:Oscar Pistorius will face sentencing for murder in June

Oscar Pistorius will be in court for sentencing in June
Former Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius will face sentencing for murder in June.

The 29-year-old athlete was denied the right to appeal against his murder conviction for the killing of Reeva Steenkamp by South Africa's highest court.

He faces a minimum of 15 years in jail and is on bail until his sentencing, due to take place between 13-17 June.

Pistorius' manslaughter conviction for shooting dead Ms Steenkamp was upgraded to murder by an appeals court in December.

The judges said he should have known that death was inevitable after he fired four times into the toilet, leaving Ms Steenkamp with "nowhere to hide".

It ruled that the original trial judge had made a "fundamentally flawed" judgement.

They also accused the appeals court of "making errors of law" and incorrectly applying the legal concept of 'dolus eventualis' - awareness of the likely outcome of one's actions.

The 'Blade Runner' was released in October 2015 after serving less than a year of his original five-year sentence.

He has maintained he fired out of fear for his life after believing an intruder was in his property on Valentine's Day 2013.

The prosecution said he shot dead Ms Steenkamp after an argument.

Ms Steenkamp's family have said the appeal proceedings were a "delaying tactic" to keep Pistorius out of jail.

Bale ready for BBC v MSN showdown

Bale ready for BBC v MSN showdown
Gareth Bale believes Real Madrid and Barcelona are fully educated on the strengths of their opponent's strikeforce ahead of their Clasico clash on Saturday at Camp Nou.

Karim Benzema, Bale and Ronaldo each found the net last time out in the 4-0 win over Sevilla and all are expected to be named in Real's starting line-up for the historic Spain derby.

Madrid's 'BBC' frontline will come head to head with the lethal Barca trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar, who will spearhead the prolific table-toppers.

Former Tottenham winger Bale is adamant both teams will be under no illusion of the talents of their rivals when the game kicks off.

"The MSN is made up of world-class players and they are doing very well at the moment," the Welsh international said.

"We know everything we can know about them, and they know all that may know about us. We three, we have a very good relationship and we play well together. But it's not for us to judge whether we are the best or not.

"The media give their opinion, people also and the only thing we can do is go on the field and try to score."

Bale has been particularly pleased with the return to fitness of comrade Benzema, who has recently recovered from a three week spell on the sideline with a muscle strain.

"It is excellent news that he returns from injury," the 26-year-old added.

"He's an important player for us. He is a world class striker and he showed this season with the number of goals he scored. He is a good tip to our attack line and hope he comes back [from international duty with France] with the same shape as before."

English managers are an embarrassment-No Premier League titles, one European trophy in 32 years

Gary Neville’s sacking at Valencia is just the latest proof of the appalling state of English coaching. The whole footballing culture within England and its media must change.

Since the Premier League was formed in 1992, not a single English manager has won the title. A lesser-known fact, however, is that the last Englishman to finish second in the top flight was Kevin Keegan at Newcastle United 20 years ago.

In the two decades following 'King Kev'’s infamous meltdown on live television, only two English bosses have even managed third position in the EPL: Roy Evans at Liverpool and a 70-year-old Sir Bobby Robson at Newcastle in 2003.

These are damning statistics. It should therefore come as no surprise that the performance of home-grown managers on the continent is equally abysmal. Gary Neville’s dreadful four-month spell as coach of Valencia, where he took nine weeks to win a league game and left the club just six points above the relegation zone, is now completely the norm for English 'gaffers'.

Since World War II, the only home-grown coaches to have won a championship in one of Europe’s four other major leagues of France, Italy, Spain and Germany are Bill Berry (Lille, 1946), Jesse Carver (Juventus, 1950) and Terry Venables (Barcelona, 1985). The only international silverware arrived half-a-century ago with Sir Alf Ramsey’s World Cup success on home soil.

The aforementioned Robson is the last Englishman to win a major continental title – leading a Ronaldo-inspired Barcelona to the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1997. You have to go back to 1984 to find an English winner of either the European Cup or UEFA Cup in the form of Joe Fagan (Liverpool) and Keith Burkinshaw (Tottenham), respectively.

The state of English coaching at the highest level is quite frankly embarrassing. The FA and Premier League should be ashamed. There are currently only three English managers in the EPL; two of these at sides who are fighting relegation (Alan Pardew and Sam Allardyce). Neville’s dismissal by Valencia means there are now no English coaches in La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1 or the Bundesliga. Even two of the last four England managers have been foreign.

Compare this to other elite European nations. Italy and Spain boast 20 coaches in the top five leagues (and are set to win four of these this season), France provides 19 and Germany supplies 12. Italian, Spanish and German trainers have won 16 Champions League titles in total since the competition was rebranded in 1992. Italian coaches alone have claimed 26 major league championships in the same time period. English managers have none in all of these categories.

The likes of Sam Allardyce have regularly complained about a lack of opportunity for home-grown managers. The Sunderland boss recently called for the introduction of a “Rooney Rule” to ensure a British manager is always interviewed for a Premier League job.

"The problem for me is we are denying British coaches positions,” he sniped in January.

“The Rooney Rule would be a fantastic idea because there are so many coaches out there who are highly qualified, have a great amount of experience and are not even getting the opportunity to do the job in their own country.”

'The Rooney Rule' was introduced in the United States to ensure non-white candidates were interviewed for NFL jobs. It was spearheaded by Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney, who felt African-Americans were not getting fair opportunities beyond playing the game.

However, English football managers are not being bypassed for interview. The truth of the matter is that they are just not good enough. Whether the country wants to accept it or not, these inadequacies at the highest level are not down to a lack of opportunity but are a by-product of the parochial footballing culture in the nation.

There are numerous traits that make a successful coach – from man-management skills and media savviness to the ability to judge and train players. But the most important quality of all is a good footballing brain. Without footballing intellect, it is impossible to become a top manager.

Neville could be considered an exception in this respect. But the English nation as a whole, to put it bluntly, lacks footballing intellect when compared to its rivals.

The main reason for this is the notoriously inward-looking British press which would have you believe that the only football being played in the world is in the Premier League, the "best league in the world."

Aside from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo - with the odd story thrown in on Barcelona and Real Madrid – the majority of the mainstream media offers next to no detailed coverage on any football outside of the British Isles.

As Malcolm X taught us many years ago, the media "controls the minds of the masses" - so it is only natural that much of the English public lives in a bubble where foreign football culture is snubbed and sniggered at.

Young aspiring players and coaches in England, also often handicapped by the language barrier, are not granted the footballing education required for them to compete with their foreign counterparts, certainly intellectually. They are often subjected to tired clichés and decades-old stereotypes by journalists and pundits. Italy still plays 'Catenaccio,' 'Germans can never be written off,' 'Argentines dive.'

There are, of course, many intelligent and knowledgeable football experts in England but mainstream reporting is often clouded in a wilful ignorance of the world game. There are too many parochial flag-wavers in influential positions, especially within the press, and this is an opinion that is widely held throughout the continent.

"Spain neither respects nor trusts the British football media, viewing outlets as tabloids dedicated to reporting unfounded rumors about the personal lives of players and the women in their lives," says Goal's Barcelona correspondent Ignasi Oliva.

"They don’t understand why there are no sports papers and why the information is so heavily weighted to reports that have nothing to do with sport.

"In that respect, it is worth recalling the words of the Spanish poet and one of the leading figures in the country’s literary movement in the early 20th Century, Antonio Machado, who said: 'Spain, wrapped in her rags, scorns the ignorant.'"

The whole ethos from top to bottom needs to change if England is to start producing cultured managers who can succeed at top clubs at home and abroad.

The media, including Gary Neville, when he returns to his old job, needs to play a huge role in this. It must take a bigger interest in foreign leagues. When a Premier League side makes a new signing from abroad, it is completely unacceptable for national pundits to remark: “nobody knows anything about him” – as they did when Francesco Guidolin was appointed as Swansea manager.
When a foreign team owned by a billionaire is drawn in the Champions League knockouts, it should not be considered a "bye" simply because journalists are too ignorant to know anything about them. This was the case last year when a Monaco team boasting stars such as Anthony Martial and Yannick Carrasco was fatefully written off against Arsenal. “To those in the English media who say our league is s**t, it proves there's perhaps s**t elsewhere as well,” Lille boss Rene Girard famously said after Monaco's 3-1 win in London.

This attitude in the UK does have its pros. The understanding that football is not just a 'game' but a lifestyle has allowed the EPL to become so popular and command the priciest global TV rights of any sport. Has that knack for marketing come at the expense of the game itself? Or has it merely highlighted a long-standing problem in the class system whereby the men who play the game are desperate to be seen as anti-intellectual 'lads,' and when players do show an interest in learning (for example, Graeme Le Saux, Sol Campbell or even Joey Barton) they are decried by fans and fellow players alike?

England must begin to embrace the finer arts of football, particularly tactics. In Italy, the importance of this part of the game is drilled into children from a young age. Coaches study their next opponents meticulously, entire training sessions can be consumed on planning, while football shows are dominated by tactical discussion. The press analysis is forensic, focusing on microscopic details. This logically creates great footballing brains – and thus countless world-class coaches such as Marcello Lippi, Giovanni Trapattoni, Carlo Ancelotti, Fabio Capello and next Chelsea manager Antonio Conte.

In England, shows such as Match of the Day are saturated by match highlights. The tactical analysis after each game is no more than a brief afterthought. How can England expect to breed skilled strategists when the message being sent out by the country’s public service broadcaster is that tactics are unimportant?

There needs to be an intellectual revolution in English football – and until there is one then it will be a long time before we see a home-grown manager lift the Premier League, let alone win another foreign championship, Champions League or World Cup

Valencia identify Man City boss Pellegrini as No.1 choice to replace Neville

Valencia identify Man City boss Pellegrini as No.1 choice to replace Neville
Valencia have lined up Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini as the No.1 candidate to replace the sacked Gary Neville, Goal understands.

It was revealed in February that Pellegrini will leave the Etihad Stadium to make way for Pep Guardiola when his contract expires in June, although there remains a very real possibility that he could yet lose his job before the end of the season, should City’s Premier League slump continue.

That has not dissuaded Valencia, though, and the club still see the Chilean as the ideal candidate to take over from Neville, who was sacked on Wednesday after collecting just three wins from 16 league games in less than four months in charge.

Suso Garcia Pitarch, sporting director at Mestalla, had already met with Pellegrini’s agent as the struggling Primera Division club planned for life next season, in the knowledge that Neville would not be a long-term fixture.

Pellegrini still owns a house in Valencia from his time managing Villarreal and it has long been suspected around City's Etihad Campus training ground that he is open to returning to Spanish football with los Che this summer.

There are a number of obstacles to overcome before a deal can be completed, however, with the veteran manager said to be averse to taking over a squad as youthful as the one in place at Valencia – something which will no doubt raise a wry smile among a section of the City support.

And Pellegrini, who has repeatedly praised the working environment at the Etihad, particularly in comparison with his tumultuous season at Real Madrid, would also like to have considerable say in major decisions taken by the club.

Peter Lim, who assumed control at Mestalla in October 2014, has developed a close relationship with super-agent Jorge Mendes in recent years and many of the club’s transfers in the last 18 months have been facilitated by the Portuguese.

Pellegrini, who has also been offered a contract by Russian side Zenit St Petersburg, is thought to be keeping his options open, and is keen to stay in England when his association with City comes to an end.

But it appears there will be no opportunity to do so, with Chelsea, who had earlier shown an interest in the veteran coach, set to appoint Antonio Conte.

Pellegrini's immediate future is just as uncertain, with City currently sitting fourth in the Premier League table, just one point above West Ham and two ahead of rivals United, having won just one of their last six matches.

That is a run that has alarmed decision makers at the Etihad and Pellegrini could be shown the door before the end of the season, with Saturday’s game against Bournemouth seen as crucial ahead of next week’s Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain.

Valencia, meanwhile, will entrust their short-term future to interim coach Pako Ayestaran, who has replaced Neville until the end of the season.

Valencia have emerged as a shock rival to Manchester United in the race for Jose Mourinho.

RUMOURS: Man Utd face shock rival for Mourinho
The former Chelsea manager has long been courted by the Red Devils, but the Spanish club are poised to approach the Portuguese after sacking Gary Neville on Wednesday

Valencia have emerged as a shock rival to Manchester United in the race for Jose Mourinho, according to The Sun.

The Spanish club sacked Gary Neville on Wednesday and serious discussions have been held with Mourinho's camp over him taking over at the Mestalla.

Mourinho would be handed a transfer budget of £100 million along with a salary of £15m-per-year and, though he would prefer to replace Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, he has yet to receive a written offer from United.

United are said to have spoken to Mourinho's agent, Jorge Mendes, but they remain hesitant to make a concrete approach for the former Chelsea boss.

Golf:Lydia Ko cruises to four-shot win in Kia Classic

Lydia Ko holds the winners trophy after her victory in the KIA Classic
World No 1 Lydia Ko captured her 11th USLPGA Tour title after cruising to a four-shot win at the Kia Classic tournament on Sunday.

The 18-year-old fired a five-under par 67 to finish the week 19-under and ensure she will remain the world's best player for a 23rd straight week.

The win puts Ko in the driver's seat heading into next week's ANA Inspiration, the first major championship of the season.

"I've been playing consistently well, so I'm really happy about that. But who knows what's going to happen tomorrow," Ko said.

Ko maintained the lead throughout Sunday after heading into the final round with a three-shot lead, finishing with seven birdies, including birdies on each of the final three holes.

South Korea's Inbee Park shot a five-under 67 to finish second on 15-under. She had birdies on three of her first eight holes Sunday to apply some pressure on Ko.

"I took a peek at the leaderboard and saw that Inbee was making a lot of birdies," Ko added. "I knew that I had to focus until the last moment. Fortunately, I made some birdies down the stretch, and that really helped."

Japan's Ai Miyazato's six-under 66 was enough for third on 12-under, while two South Koreans, Park Sung-Hyun and Jenny Shin, finished tied for fourth a shot further back after level-par rounds on day four.

Four players tied for sixth on 10-under, comprising Gerina Piller, China's Feng Shanshan, Jessica Korda and South Korea's Kim Hyo-Joo.

Cricket:South Africa end World Twenty20 campaign with win over Sri Lanka

Hashim Amla struck an unbeaten 56 as South Africa eased to an eight-wicket win over defending champions Sri Lanka in the final match of the Super 10 stage of the World Twenty20.

Amla guided the Proteas to their target of 121 with 14 balls left to complete a miserable tournament for Sri Lanka, who won just one of their four games to finish level with Afghanistan on points.

With both sides already eliminated from the tournament, only a consolation win was on offer to the victors and South Africa cruised it despite a solid start by their opponents.

Dinesh Chandimal, leading the side in the absence of the injured Lasith Malinga (hamstring), put on 45 for the first wicket with Tillakaratne Dilshan (36) in under five overs but when the wheels fell off, they did quickly.

Dilshan welcomed Aaron Phangiso (2-26) into the attack by swatting the left-armer for 10 off two balls but the spinner gained quick revenge by bowling Chandimal and Lahu Thirimanne through the gate with successive deliveries.

Just when Sri Lanka seemed back on track with a third-wicket stand of 30, Milinda Siriwardana (15) was sent back by Dilshan as he attempted to pinch a single to mid-wicket only to be run out by a distance.

A score of 75-3 became 78-4 as Shehan Jayasuriya looped a catch to cover and seven runs later Dilshan was on his way, trapped lbw on the sweep by Farhaan Behardien.

Chamara Kapugedera had no answer to Imran Tahir's googly before recalled paceman Dale Steyn claimed his first wicket of the tournament, Thisara Perera picking out Behardien at cover.

Sri Lanka's last five wickets fell for 35 runs and a total of 120 off 19.3 overs never looked enough even when Quinton de Kock was run out by Dilshan's throw for nine.

Faf du Plessis (31) made light work of knocking off the runs until he fell to a terrible lbw decision, given out as he attempted to scoop despite a big inside edge.

Amla went on to post his fifty off 47 balls, passing 1,000 career T20 runs in the process, before AB de Villiers swung a Suranga Lakmal full toss for six to end the match in emphatic style.

Eagles land in Alexandria for Egypt showdown

.
Nigeria national team arrived Alexandria on Tuesday evening as they get set face Egypt in Tuesday’s blockbuster Africa Cup of Nations qualifier encounter billed for the Borg El-Arab Stadium.

The team led by NFF President Amaju Pinnick arrived the north African nation few days after being held by the Pharaohs to a 1-1 draw at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.

On arrival, the team was received by a team of Nigerian Embassy officials led by ambassador Mohammed Maccido, who expressed his delight at their safe arrival and admonished them to make the country proud.

However coach Samson Siasia has vowed that his team would gun for victory against the hosts.

“We know we have no choice but to win, so we will go all out,” said Siasia.

“There is no alternative. All the players are aware of that fact and whoever gets to play tomorrow will fight very hard for the country.”

Following Chad’s withdrawal from the qualifiers, only one team would qualify from Group G of the qualifying series.

Ramsey would shine at Barcelona, says Former Wales international Ian Rush.

Ramsey would shine at Barcelona - Rush
Former Wales international Ian Rush believes countryman Aaron Ramsey would be a perfect fit for European and Spanish champions Barcelona.

Ramsey, 25, has been tentatively linked with Barca in recent campaigns, and the Arsenal midfielder is rumoured to be a target for the La Liga outfit this summer.

Whether they make a move for the Welshman remains to be seen, but Rush believes Ramsey would have no trouble fitting in at the Camp Nou.

"I think he's a great player, fantastic," the Liverpool great told Wales Online. "People who criticise him don't know enough in my opinion.

He's a match winner, his energy is vital and I think he's a big part of Arsenal's play.

"It's no coincidence that people talk about him and Barcelona, he's one of those that could easily play in that league.

"I think the way Barcelona play suits him. Aaron likes to get forward and score goals, and his sense of duty in midfield would be less there than it is at Arsenal.

"He would be a great pick if he went somewhere like that."

F1:Las Vegas has F1 contract, reveals Bernie Ecclestone

F1 has agreed a deal to race in Las Vegas, according to Bernie Ecclestone.

Although the F1 supremo says he cannot foresee this year's 21-race calendar expanding, Ecclestone has warned that the Italian GP could be dropped - with Vegas apparently positioned to replace Monza on the calendar.

"Monza has got a contract for this year so it is going to go ahead. Next year is the question mark. I don't think we have to have an Italian Grand Prix. Somebody once told me a funny thing that you couldn't have Formula 1 without a race in France but we do," Ecclestone told The Daily Mail before adding that organisers of a proposed Grand Prix in Las Vegas "have a contract. Vegas would be super."

America currently stages a single race, the US GP, after plans for an event in New Jersey were dropped.

"We have got 21 races now. It could go more, but I don't think it will. It's enough. Some of the guys at the teams are shattered," said Ecclestone.

In a wide-ranging interview, Ecclestone also revealed that a sale price between two unnamed would-be investors and CVC, the owners of F1, has been agreed.

'There are two people who want to buy,' he said. 'Actually, two of the people have agreed the price. It's just a question of whether CVC wants to sell or not.'

Lukaku open to Mourinho reunion

Lukaku open to Mourinho reunion
Romelu Lukaku says he would be open to a reunion with Jose Mourinho amid rumours linking him with a summer move to Manchester United.

The Belgium striker, 22, enjoyed little success during his spell at Stamford Bridge working under Mourinho, with the Portuguese coach sanctioning the £28 million move to Everton in July 2014.

Mourinho has been strongly tipped to take over from Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford in the close season and Lukaku stated he would be willing to reconcile with his former boss.

"Of course," Lukaku told Derniere Heure. "Some people will say that I need to convince him but it's not a question of that. Three years ago I was 20 and I wasn't ready to be immediately effective in a top team.

"Several good seasons, including the current one, have changed the situation. I'll be 23 [in May] and I could leave this summer."

The former Anderlecht striker has enjoyed a prolific campaign, scoring 25 goals in all competitions for the Toffees.

Mourinho didn't believe in me anymore, says John Obi Mikel

Mikel: Mourinho didn't believe in me anymore
John Obi Mikel has once again hit out at Jose Mourinho’s management style and says the axed Chelsea boss never placed his faith in the midfielder.

The new Nigeria captain made just five Premier League appearances under the Portuguese coach this season, but has become a mainstay in the side under Guus Hiddink.

And Mikel believes he is benefitting from having a manager who trusts him again, suggesting Mourinho overlooked him regardless of how well he performed in training.

“I think confidence is everything, if a manager doesn’t believe in you, trust me there’s no way you can succeed,” the 28-year-old exclusively told Goal while on international duty with the Super Eagles.

“Even if you do things right he would always make sure he finds fault.”

He continued: “People change in any walk of life, maybe he decided he wanted to do better in a different way and he didn’t need me anymore.

“He didn’t have the belief that he had in me before, which is fine because every manager has the player that they have trust in.

“It is a tough business, football, so when a manager comes in he wants to have people he believes in. If he doesn’t believe in you he doesn’t play you. And I think it’s all about a manager giving a player confidence.”

Chelsea technical director Michael Emenolo described a “palpable discord” between the manager and the players prior to Mourinho’s departure, when the side languished in 16th place – just one point above the drop zone.

Mikel has previously credited new boss Hiddink with reinstalling a sense of togetherness at Stamford Bridge, and praised the impact the Dutchman has made in such a short space of time.

“Hiddink came in, he spoke to me, he gave me the confidence and now I have played 20 games and we’re in the best position - where we haven’t been all season.”

This is not the first time Mikel has aimed a jibe at his former boss, with the Nigeria international claiming in January that there was a total lack of communication between himself and Mourinho, something Hiddink has changed dramatically.

I will be at Arsenal next season, says Arsene Wenger

Wenger: I will be at Arsenal next season
Arsene Wenger has confirmed he is not thinking about stepping down from the Arsenal job, as he revealed his intention to stay for at least another season.

The manager's position has been questioned by some fans, with banners appearing at the Emirates Stadium calling for the long-serving Frenchman to step down following exits from the FA Cup and the Champions League as well as poor Premier League form.

But Wenger insists that he will be back to fight again next season as he enters the final year of his three-year deal with the club.

"During the season, [that criticism] was not very welcome when you fight for the championship, especially after the Tottenham game, when we were a bit unlucky," he told beIN Sports.

"I give my best to the club I love and if I can share that love with the supporters it’s even better. I want to make sure that I give my best and that I put my knowledge at the disposal of the team.

"I am committed and have no doubt I will be there next season."

Despite the pressure, Wenger insists that he is only thinking about his own team's performances as they look to keep up a distant title bid over the last stretch of the season.

"I don't worry too much about the rest - what people say," he affirmed.

"All the rest is judgement, opinions and that is linked with belief from the last disappointment or result.

"In my job I focus on how we perform. In life, it's very important you focus on what you are appointed for - and I am appointed to perform and do the best for my club.

"My future is my future, I don't master that."

Africa Cup of Nations 2017: Riot stops play in qualifier

Kenya lost their 2017 Afcon qualifier in Nairobi 1-0 to Guinea Bissau
A riot stopped play in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Sunday as fans threw missiles and police fired tear gas into the stands.

The unrest broke out when a goal was awarded to Guinea Bissau after 81 minutes, with Kenya's players arguing the ball had not crossed the line.

Play was halted for 30 minutes as Kenya fans threw missiles at the Guinea Bissau bench and the fourth official.

Kenya, who were beaten 1-0 in Nairobi, could face sanctions.

The result takes Guinea Bissau to the top of their qualifying group and leaves Kenya with little chance of qualifying for next year's tournament.

Sunday's Afcon qualifiers
Mozambique 0-0 Ghana
Kenya 0-1 Guinea-Bissau
Congo 1-1 Zambia
Botswana 2-1 Comoros
Benin 4-1 South Sudan
Elsewhere in Group E, Congo and Zambia drew 1-1 in an identical scoreline to their result in Ndola on Wednesday.

Jordan Massengo put Congo ahead in Brazzaville just after half-time, with Winston Kalengo equalising in the 72nd minute.

Guinea Bissau lead the group on seven points, one point ahead of both Congo and Zambia, with Kenya bottom, six points off the top.

In Sunday's first Nations Cup qualifier, Ghana lost their 100% record in Group H with a 0-0 draw in Mozambique.

The result in Maputo leaves the Black Stars on 10 points, four ahead of Mauritius, the surprise package in Group H. Mauritius could close that gap with a win over Rwanda in Kigali on Tuesday.

West Bromwich Albion's Stephane Sessegnon scored twice for Benin in Cotonou as the hosts beat South Sudan 4-1 to go top of Group C.

Mickael Pote and Jodel Dossou were also on target for Benin, with Atak Lual grabbing a consolation for the away side.

Mali could regain the lead in that group if they beat Equatorial Guinea in Malabo on Monday.

Comoros, who got their first win in a major qualifying competition when they beat Botswana at home on Thursday, were brought back down to earth with a 2-1 defeat in the return fixture.

Comoros looked like they might complete a double over their opponents when Mchangama Youssouf scored just before the break.

But second-half goals from Galabgwe Moyana and then Joel Mogorosi gave Botswana the win which puts them level on points with the top two, Uganda and Burkina Faso, who play each other in Kampala on Tuesday.

All group winners are guaranteed places at the 2017 tournament in Gabon, with the best two runners-up joining them.

Messi hails Rijkaard as his most important coach

Messi hails Rijkaard as his most important coach
Lionel Messi has hailed Frank Rijkaard as the most important coach of his career after he helped him break into the Barcelona first-team.

The Argentina international made his senior debut for the Camp Nou outfit as a 16-year-old under Rijkaard in 2004 before going onto become one of the world's greatest ever players over the next decade.

And though he thrived under both Pep Guardiola and current manager Luis Enrique, Messi still cites the Dutchman as the man who gave him the opportunity to reach his potential.

"The truth is that all the coaches I had since I arrived in the Primera Division taught me something," he told MBC. "But I think the most important in my career was Rikjaard.

"If he hadn't trusted in me and not decided to put me in the first team first to train and then play my first match, maybe I wouldn't have made it to the first team.

"I always said that he was for me a very important person, because he trusted in me, put me in at the right time, picked me to play for the first team and that was very important for me."

The winger did not meet up with the Wales squad this week ahead of their international friendlies due to his wife, Emma Rhys-Jones, being so close to her due date.

And, sure enough, the Welsh couple welcomed daughter Nava Valentina into the world on Tuesday, with Bale announcing the news via Twitter with the message: "Delighted to welcome another beautiful baby daughter into our family today. Nava Valentina Bale."

Barcelona 3-1 Arsenal (agg. 5-1): Messi, Suarez & Neymar fire Catalans to quarter-finals

Barcelona 3-1 Arsenal (agg. 5-1): Messi, Suarez & Neymar fire Catalans to quarter-finals
The fearsome Blaugrana attacking trident were at it again on Wednesday with a goal each, while Elneny's wonder-strike proved too little, too late for Arsene Wenger's charges

Two-third of Barcelona's MSN were on target at Camp Nou to ensure easy passage to the Champions League quarter-finals, as Neymar and Luis Suarez hit in each half to secure a 2-1 victory over Arsenal.

Lionel Messi had done the damage at the Emirates Stadium with two goals, and his strike partners were not to be left out as Neymar opened the scoring thanks to a fine Suarez pass.

Mohamed Elneny gave Arsene Wenger's men a glimmer of hope with a fine first goal for the club, but it was short-lived as Suarez hit back with a fantastic bicycle kick.

In the dying minutes Messi struck to add his name to the scoresheet with a fine chip, leaving Barcelona resounding winners over the Londoners.

Boxing:Tony Bellew world title fight may be at Everton's Goodison Park

Tony Bellew could box for world honours at Everton FC
Tony Bellew will challenge for the vacant WBC cruiserweight title against Ilunga Makabu - and could do so at his beloved Goodison Park.

Bellew fell short in world title fights at light-heavyweight against Nathan Cleverly and Adonis Stevenson but has strung together six victories since moving up to 200lbs, avenging his defeat to Cleverly in the process.

The staunch Evertonian (26-2-1-KO16), who starred in Hollywood blockbuster Creed  last year, has now landed a third opportunity and will go for gold in front of his fellow football fans if promoter Eddie Hearn has his way.

We have made no secret of our desire to stage this bout at Goodison to recreate the scenes of the recent Creed movie.

Hearn told Sky Sports: "We have made no secret of our desire to stage this bout at Goodison to recreate the scenes of the recent Creed movie - it's a fairytale story and the club are very keen to make it happen.

"I'm so pleased Tony gets to challenge for the title. I've been working for a while now to try and open something up but it's such a difficult division to get a break in, especially when the unification between Denis Lebedev and Victor Emilio Ramirez was announced.

"Makabu is without doubt one of the toughest fights in the division but Tony was willing to fight anyone to make his dream become reality."

Grigory Drozd was due to defend the WBC belt against mandatory challenger Makabu but withdrew with a serious injury and as a result the title became vacant.

Congo's Makabu (19-1-KO18) is undefeated since losing on his professional debut eight years ago but has not boxed since last May when he defeated Thabiso Mchunu.

Fifa to reclaim funds from corrupt officials

Fifa to reclaim funds from corrupt officials
World football's governing body wishes to pursue funds that it claims were wrongly lost through the scandals that have rocked the institution over the last year

Fifa has lodged an appeal to reclaim the funds that were lost to corrupt officials through bribes and other illegal schemes.

A statement from the world football's governing body read: "Fifa today submitted documents to the US authorities in an effort to reclaim tens of millions of dollars pocketed illegally by corrupt Fifa members and other football officials.

"In its capacity as a 'victimised institution,' Fifa has submitted a Request for Restitution to the US Attorney’s Office and the US Probation Office for the Eastern District of New York, claiming damages from 41 former officials of Fifa and other football organisations, including Chuck Blazer, Jack Warner, Jeffrey Webb and others who have been indicted in the ongoing investigation by the US Department of Justice.

"Fifa estimates that at a minimum tens of millions of dollars were diverted from the football community illegally through bribery, kickbacks and corrupt schemes carried out by the defendants. This amount is likely to increase as the investigation continues. The US government has already announced forfeiture amounts that should cover Fifa’s claims for damages.

"Fifa is seeking restitution for the money the defendants pocketed to enrich themselves, but also for the salaries, benefits and bonuses that were paid to them during their tenure at Fifa and other football organisations. Fifa is also seeking money from the defendants for the damage their actions caused to Fifa’s brand and reputation, its intellectual property and its business relationships."

Meanwhile, newly elected president Gianni Infantino said via a statement released on Wednesday: "The convicted defendants abused the positions of trust they held at Fifa and other international football organisations and caused serious and lasting damage to Fifa, its member associations and the football community.
"The monies they pocketed belonged to global football and were meant for the development and promotion of the game. Fifa as the world governing body of football wants that money back and we are determined to get it no matter how long it takes.

"The defendants diverted this money not just from Fifa but from players, coaches and fans worldwide who benefit from the programmes that Fifa runs to develop and promote football.

"These dollars were meant to build football fields, not mansions and pools; to buy football kits, not jewellery and cars; and to fund youth player and coach development, not to underwrite lavish lifestyles for football and sports marketing executives.

"When Fifa recovers this money, it will be directed back to its original purpose: for the benefit and development of international football."

Mourinho explains why winning the Champions League is easier for Barcelona, Real Madrid & Bayern Munich

Mourinho explains why winning the Champions League is easier for Barcelona, Real Madrid & Bayern Munich
The former Chelsea boss thinks English clubs are at a disadvantage in European competitions as they compete for the league title into the closing stages of the season

Jose Mourinho has suggested it is easier for the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich to win the Champions League than it is for English clubs due to the competitive nature of the Premier League.

Mourinho's former club Chelsea crashed out of the competition at the last 16 stage against Paris Saint-Germain, who have already been crowned Ligue 1 champions with eight games left to play in the season.

And Mourinho believes juggling fixture congestion and a tighter race for the league title leaves the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City at a disadvantage in Europe.

"Some countries in this moment, it is easier for them," Mourinho told BT Sport. "A team who are champions in February - that team have much more conditions to be successful than a team that are playing until the last match of the season in May.

"I'll give you an example: Two years ago I played Champions League semi-final with Chelsea against Atletico Madrid.

"Two days later I was playing Liverpool v Chelsea at Anfield to decide the champions of England.

"So I would look to a Spanish team - Barcelona, Real Madrid - I would look to a German team - Bayern Munich - and I would say comparing the competitive realities during 10 months [of the compertition], I think they arrive in the key moment of the season in better conditions than other clubs."

DR Congo pull out of Africa Cup of Nations U17 & U20 qualifiers

The east African country has withdrawn from the competitions’ qualifying series according to the Confederation of African Football

DR Congo have withdrawn from participating in the qualifiers for the 2017 U17 & U20 Africa Cup of Nations.

This was made known by the Confederation of African Football without stating reasons for their decision.

DR Congo’s U20 were billed to face Zambia in the first qualifier for a place to the 2017 African Youth Championship, while Burundi U17 would face tackle their U17 team for the Afcon U17 tournament billed for Madagascar.

With this development, their opponents have qualified for the second round of qualifiers for the biennial African cadet championship showpiece.

Ranieri aiming to retire at Leicester

Ranieri aiming to retire at Leicester
The Italian has no interest in managing another club and remains confident of keeping hold of star duo N'Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez, who have been linked with moves away

Claudio Ranieri hopes to retire from coaching at the end of his time at Leicester, but is open to signing a long-term deal at the King Power Stadium.

Veteran Italian Ranieri has led Leicester to a sensational Premier League title bid during his first season at the helm and the club currently sit top of the table with a five-point advantage over closest rivals Tottenham with eight games remaining.

Ranieri does not see himself managing another club when his time at Leicester comes to an end, but he is in no rush to call time on his career.

"I am fine in Leicester and do not think about moving. I think this will be my last club," Ranieri told Marca.

"I hope they give me a long contract, six or seven years, and then I can retire here.

"I've always had a lot of opportunities. I'm a lucky man to work in what I love most - for almost 30 years I have enjoyed my greatest passion."

Riyad Mahrez and N'Golo Kante have been among Leicester's outstanding performers this season and have subsequently been linked with moves to the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively, while Jamie Vardy - the league's joint-highest goalscorer this season with 19 goals - signed a new contract in February.

But Ranieri is confident of keeping hold of his prize assets, claiming they are "kings" at the club.

"I think so [we will be able to keep them]. Mahrez and Kante are just beginning; they are not over 25-years-old, have quality and must go slowly. And Vardy we already know [he will stay]" the coach added.

"We will have to see. Here in Leicester they are the kings. Everything goes well and everyone is happy, but when you go to a big club the pressure is enormous and you have to give everything."

Despite leading the way in the top-flight, Ranieri is also adamant there is no pressure on his side to claim the title with their season objective of avoiding relegation already achieved.

"I have a tight, wonderful dressing room and the team works, but we know we have not done anything," he added.

"Everyone expects us to win the Premier League. It's amazing that in the era of money a small team is performing this feat.

"Leicester is a small club and you have to go slowly. We have achieved the most important goal, we have already won - we will play in the Premier League next season.

"Now, let's fight for the Europa League. And if we stay on top, we will try to enter the Champions League and then be champions, but we must go slowly."

'I don't see myself leaving' - Neymar feels at home in Barcelona

'I don't see myself leaving' - Neymar feels at home in Barcelona
The Brazil international says he has no interest in leaving Camp Nou because he is currently playing alongside the world's best players

Neymar feels at home at Barcelona and has no desire to leave the club amid delays over a contract extension.

Brazil captain Neymar has been linked with the likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid as talks over a new deal drag on.

However, the 24-year-old has stated he is not interested in a move away from Camp Nou.

"I think the important thing in football is you always play alongside good players, and I think that the best are here. Therefore, I am very happy at Barcelona," Neymar told Globo.

"It is a team where I feel at home. My team-mates give me tranquillity about everything. I still do not see myself leaving Barcelona."

Neymar's relationship with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez has once again proved integral to Barca's campaign, with the trio combining for 103 goals in all competitions.

And the Brazilian believes that their connection on and off the field is at the heart of their sensational form.

"I think both [are my best friends], neither is closer than the other. I had more time with Messi, then Suarez came and created a very great relationship," Neymar added.

"We are always joking in training and outside as well. The affinity we have is great."

Barca entertain Arsenal in the Champions League last-16 second leg at Camp Nou on Wednesday, while they hold an eight-point advantage at the summit of La Liga and face Sevilla in the Copa del Rey final in May.

Neymar is eager for progression in Europe to keep their quest for a second successive treble on track and says the players are in high spirits.

"We are living a great moment. We are doing very well in La Liga, we are already in the final of the Copa del Rey, and now we need to advance in the Champions League," he added.

"The guys are very happy with the work we have been doing, with everything that is happening on the field."

Adidas unveil stunning signature Pogba boots

The Juventus midfielder, who has signed a 10-year deal with the sports giant, helped design the footwear and will wear them against Bayern Munich in the Champions League

To celebrate a long-term deal with Paul Pogba, Adidas have unveiled a new pair of football boots designed by the Juventus star.

A black and gold Adidas Ace 16+ PureControl come with 'POGBOOM' and 'POGBANCE' titled across the back and will be worn by "the most sought after footballer" during Wednesday's Champions League tie against Bayern.

The boots, which will not be available on general sale, feature gold stripes and sole, silver studs on a black background and pay tribute to the Frenchman's signature goal celebrations on the heel.

"Adidas believes in my dream of building hype in the world of football," Pogba said in a statement.

"I hope I can leave a footprint and add something exciting and new to this iconic brand. The best is yet to come. This is Pogboom!"

"We don't have to calculate too much, we know we have to attack and score," said Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

Defender Laurent Koscielny returns from injury as Arsenal attempt to overturn a two-goal deficit against Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

The Gunners trail 2-0 from the first leg and must score twice at the Nou Camp to have any chance of progressing.

"We don't have to calculate too much, we know we have to attack and score," said Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

"The players are united to give a strong performance."

The tie was finely balanced for most of the first leg at Emirates Stadium, but two Lionel Messi goals in the final 20 minutes put the Spanish champions firmly in control.

"Our approach was not bad in the first leg but we lost our balance and got caught," said Wenger.

The Gunners boss has come in for renewed criticism as Arsenal's pursuit of trophies domestically and in Europe has suffered a series of setbacks.

But the Frenchman, 66, remains as dedicated as ever to bringing success to the club.

"I am even more motivated than the day I arrived," he said. "When you are a long time somewhere, people always question you. I don't question my dedication, it is 100%."

He added: "We have gone through a disappointing spell and it is important to remain calm and strong."

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique, whose side are aiming to become the first team to retain the Champions League trophy since the old European Cup was rebranded in 1992, had supportive words for his Arsenal counterpart.

Asked if he could imagine replicating Wenger's 20-year stay at one club, he said: "In the modern era, it is impossible.

"It means Wenger is a very good coach. No one doubts that and only the chosen ones can be such a long time in one club."

Barcelona, on a 37-game unbeaten run, are strong favourites to reach the last eight, but Enrique says his team will not take anything for granted.

"We want to be better than Arsenal on Wednesday," he said.

Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar are all expected to start for Barcelona.

World Twenty20 2016: Shahid Afridi stars as Pakistan crush Bangladesh

Shahid Afridi plays a shot
Pakistan cruised to victory in their opening match of the World Twenty20 as they crushed Bangladesh by 55 runs.

Batting first in Kolkata, Pakistan built a huge total of 201-5, with Mohammad Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad both making brisk fifties in a stand of 95.

Captain Shahid Afridi then added late impetus with a brilliant cameo of 49 from 19 balls.

In reply, Bangladesh mustered only 146-6, as Afridi and Mohammad Amir took two wickets apiece.

The Tigers entered the tournament with high hopes following a strong performance at the Asia Cup, where they beat Pakistan en route to the final, but they appear no closer to shaking off the tag of perennial also-rans at global tournaments.

Pakistan meanwhile top Group 2 and victory in their next match against India on Saturday would see them take a big step towards the semi-finals - and leave their rivals on the brink of elimination from their home tournament.

All-rounder Afridi, 37, entered this tournament with question marks hanging over his ability to contribute in the shortest format, with just 17 runs and three wickets in his past six Twenty20 internationals.

But on the biggest stage, he answered his critics in the most emphatic possible fashion - first with the bat and then the ball.

Coming to the crease with Pakistan already well set at 121-2 and 6.1 overs remaining, Afridi took the innings into overdrive with a belligerent knock containing four fours and four sixes.

Scoring particularly heavily down the ground on the leg-side, he moved to within one run of the fastest T20 international fifty by a Pakistan batsman before he picked out the man at deep square leg with two balls of the innings remaining.

Afridi then took centre-stage with his leg-spin, first removing the dangerous Sabbir Rahman with a brilliant delivery which skidded on to the leg stump.

And he then effectively ended the contest with the crucial wicket of Tamim Iqbal - his 37th in World T20 tournaments, one short of the record held by Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga.

The match was also notable for the return to the world stage of fast bowler Mohammad Amir, playing in his first major tournament since the 2010 World T20 after serving a five-year ban for spot-fixing.

The 23-year-old didn't take long to make an impact, ripping one through the defences of Soumya Sarkar with his third delivery as Bangladesh's reply got off to the worst possible start.

Returning later in the innings, he then produced an excellent slower ball to outfox Mushfiqur Rahim, who was caught behind.

He should have had another wicket, with Ahmed Shehzad spilling an easy chance off Shakib al-Hasan, but his own fielding was secure, claiming a good boundary catch to dismiss Mohammad Mithun.

With Amir looking back to somewhere near his best, as part of a dangerous left-arm pace trio with Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Irfan, Pakistan will hav

FA Cup: Everton to face Man Utd or West Ham in semi-finals

Slaven Bilic (left) and Louis van Gaal
verton will face either Manchester United or West Ham in the FA Cup semi-finals, while Crystal Palace will take on Watford.

The ties will be played on the weekend of 23-24 April at Wembley.

Manchester United will travel to Upton Park for a quarter-final replay after the sides drew 1-1 at Old Trafford.

The date of that last-eight replay will be announced after the second leg of United's Europa League last-16 tie against Liverpool on Thursday.

Everton beat Chelsea 2-0 on Saturday to reach the last four for the first time since 2012.

The other semi-final is a repeat of the 2013 Championship play-off final, which Palace won thanks to a Kevin Phillips penalty.

Watford, who knocked out holders Arsenal on Sunday, will attempt to reach the final for the first time since 1984.

Palace are through to their first FA Cup semi-final in 21 years.

Tennis:Judy Murray quits as GB's Fed Cup skipper

Judy Murray has stepped down as Great Britain's Fed Cup captain after five years in the role.

BBC Sport understands she has decided the promotion play-off loss to Belgium in February was her last in charge.

The Scot, 56, has spoken about spending more time as a grandmother after son Andy became a father in February.

There is no obvious replacement, though former British number one Anne Keothavong, who played 39 Fed Cup ties, would be a strong candidate.

The 32-year-old retired three years ago to pursue a career in broadcasting.

Britain has been stuck in Group 1 of the Euro Africa Zone for 12 years.

Murray advises teenager Katie Swan during the tie with Belgium
In 2012 and 2013, Murray led Britain into World Group play-off ties in Sweden and Argentina, but Britain lost both and had to return to the round robin stage the following year.

A wrist injury deprived the team of Laura Robson in both 2014 and 2015, while Johanna Konta withdrew this year to avoid "jeopardising an ongoing intestinal issue".

Konta's decision, which was made just a few days after she reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open, is said to have dismayed the captain.

It is clear the format of the Fed Cup has proved a great frustration for Murray, along with the politics of the Lawn Tennis Association.

Her ideas often seem at odds with the direction the governing body has taken.

It has also become apparent she feels more should have been done to build on the success of both of her sons and a generation of talented Scottish players.

It remains to be seen how involved Murray will want to be in the future of British tennis.

Her contract with the Lawn Tennis Association allowed her to spend time mentoring some of Britain's most promising female coaches.

Murray's Tennis on the Road programme, which promises to "bring tennis to a whole new generation of kids" in Scotland, is now supported by the LTA, too.

Her Miss-Hits scheme, which targets girls between the age of five and eight, was launched in partnership with the LTA in the summer of 2014

Rugby:Rugby player's penis almost torn off in tackle

A rugby league player says his penis was nearly torn off in a game last month.
Haydn Peacock suffered the partial dismemberment while playing for French team AS Carcassonne last month.
Luckily, he's now fine and able to joke about it.
Unsurprisingly, his description of the the incident is fairly graphic so we've replaced some of the ruder words with fruit and veg.
"When we played the other week their centre pretty much ripped my [cucumber] off", he told journalist and former player Guy Williams, who runs the website French Footy.

Haydn Peacock was raised in Australia but has a British passport and represents Ireland internationally.
The intimate injury happened when a player from St Esteve Catalans Dragons grabbed his groin.
Haydn needed eleven stitches.
Think about that for a second, eleven stitches.
"I took the ball off the scrum and made a half-break, and their centre has come across from the inside and reached out in a last-ditch effort and has got a hold of my [turnip] with one hand and pulled me down."

He continued playing, somehow not noticing the damage until half-time.
"I checked on it and the skin is half ripped off and I was like, where's the doctor?
"In all of my career I've never heard of anyone having anything like that happen - eleven stitches in the [butternut squash]"
Despite the tough tackle on his tough tackle, Haydn won't be wearing protection for future encounters.
"I remember I had to strap it all up for the next game...the coach wanted me to go out and buy a cup but I'm not going to play with a cup,
"I got the stitches out and it's all sweet. No dramas."

Latest Football Gossips:Wenger could quit Arsenal if fan unrest continues

The Frenchman has come under pressure from fans after a series of poor results and could now decide to walk away from the club before the end of his current contract

Arsene Wenger could choose to quit Arsenal if the current supporter unrest continues despite having the full backing of the Gunners board, according to the Daily Mail.

The Frenchman has come under pressure from fans after defeats to Swansea, Manchester United, Barcelona and Watford with a banner calling for him to leave unfurled during the club's FA Cup clash with Hull City.

Wenger has a year remaining on his current deal after this season and has always insisted he sees out his contracts, but could now opt to walk away from the club he has served for 20 years.

'Arsenal & Manchester City are out of the Premier League title race',says Koeman

Leicester have restored their five-point lead at the top of the table with Monday's 1-0 win over Newcastle United

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman believes Arsenal and Manchester City are now out of the Premier League title race.

Leicester City took another step closer to glory with a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United which has restored their five-point advantage over Tottenham at the top of the table.

And Koeman claims both City and the Gunners will struggle to overturn their gap.

“Eleven points from Arsenal, twelve from Manchester City - they are out of the title,” he told Sky Sports.

“And it will be a fight between Tottenham and Leicester. And that makes, in my opinion, the difference between before the game, this result.

“Still Tottenham are close, but still it’s a fight between two teams, before this game it was a fight between four or five, and that’s the difference that begins to run in your mind, if you’re a Leicester player.”
