Tennis:Rafael Nadal aims for first ATP World Tour Finals title but says 2016 his priority

Rafael Nadal admits his priority is to prepare for the new year as he heads into his first match at the ATP World Tour Finals against Stan Wawrinka on Monday evening.

After suffering from back trouble, wrist injuries and appendicitis in 2014, the Spaniard returned only to suffer from lengthy spells of anxiety on the court earlier this year.

But the 14-time major winner is rediscovering his best form just in time for the season-ending tournament at London's O2 although he has focused his attentions on the new season.

"I'm happy to have qualified this year and the fact that I'm going to be here playing this week is good news so I hope to enjoy it," said the 29-year-old.

"I'm in a much better position than what I had in Miami [where he suffered a 6-4 2-6 6-3 defeat to his compatriot Fernando Verdasco in March].

"The last couple of months have been positive for me. The intensity on the practice court and the calm that I feel now playing is completely different than a few months ago so I'm just enjoying again on court and my biggest goal is to try to arrive for next season in a good shape and a high level.

"This is my preparation for next season and I believe I am in the right way."
