Cycling:Alberto Contador eyes wins at Tour de France & Olympic Games in 2016

Alberto Contador plans to retire at the end of 2016
Alberto Contador has revealed he will join Chris Froome in attempting to win a Tour de France, Olympic road race and Olympic time trial treble next year.

No rider has won all three in a single season, but with both Olympic events taking place on hilly courses suited to climbers, the favourites for the Tour are also expected to be among the contenders in Rio.

Froome announced last month that he will target the treble and has since been on a reconnaissance trip to Brazil, while Contador intends to retire at the end of 2016 and believes making history would be the perfect way to bow out.

The 32-year-old Spaniard told Sky Sports News HQ: "Next year will be special for the Olympic Games. It is true a lot of riders have the same motive and that only one can win.

"OK, it [the Olympics] is after the Tour de France, but it is special because the road race is hard, with long mountains, and this can be good for me.

"Also the TT. I don't look [reconnoitre] - only on paper - but it is hard and I think I can do a good race. Of course, always it is hard to win, but if you don't try, then you can never know if you can win."

Just 17 days separate the final stage of the Tour on July 24, the Olympic road race on August 6 and the Olympic time trial on August 10.

The Olympic road race will be held on a 256.4km course containing two hilly circuits, while the time trial will take place on a 59.6km course.
