Boxing:David Haye joins trainer Shane McGuigan ahead of possible comeback

David Haye has moved a step closer to making a boxing comeback after linking up with trainer Shane McGuigan.

The former WBA world heavyweight champion has not been in the ring since July 2012 when he stopped Dereck Chisora in five rounds at Upton Park.

There has been ongoing speculation concerning a possible end to his retirement, but Haye seemed to have made a final decision on his career by closing his Vauxhall gym and selling off his Hayemaker boxing ring on eBay.

But it seems the 35-year-old Londoner has had a change of heart by teaming up with Barry McGuigan's son Shane, who also trains super-bantamweight world champion Carl Frampton.

Haye said: "My mother and father both said, 'You can do anything you want, as long as you're the best at it'.

"It's deeply instilled in me to be the best, no matter what. Train the hardest, push the hardest, punch the hardest, get hit the least and win as many titles.

"When you're in a fight you push yourself to the limit. It's what I do. Looking at all the British and world fighters, the one fighter that stood out for me was Carl.

"Carl's speed, timing, accuracy and punch variety is something that I didn't have in my arsenal. The guy behind that is Shane, so he was the guy I sought out."

Anthony Joshua has emerged as a potential world title successor in Haye's absence, and faces amateur nemesis Dillian Whyte for the British and Commonwealth titles next month, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

But Haye is undaunted by the level of competition and added: "There's nothing in the everyday world that can give you the same buzz as walking to a ring with 20,000 screaming for a fight.

"I can understand why boxers keep coming back... being one of them."
