NPFL Week 37 Round Up: Enyimba win seventh NPFL title, Kwara United go down

Watched by a record capacity crowd in Aba, the People’s Elephants secured the point needed to emerge as league champions but the Harmony Warriors were relegated

KANO PILLARS 1-0 AKWA UNITED

Sai Masu Gida rounded off their last home tie of the season with a 1-0 triumph at the expense of the Promise Keepers at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano on Sunday.

Ubong Ekpai who played against his former club was upended in the vital area by Akwa United goalkeeper, Olufemi Kayode from where Rabiu Ali converted a 62nd minute spot kick.

Pillars who won’t feature on the continent next year are seventh on the log with 55 points from 37 matches while Akwa United, whose loss in Kano saw them slip into the relegation zone, must win at home to Lobi on Sunday and still pray that Dolphins capitulate in Ibadan. Akwa United are 17th on the table with 44 points from 37 games.

EL KANEMI WARRIORS 1-0 WIKKI TOURISTS

The Borno Army have confirmed their place among the elite division teams after a close 1-0 home win over continental ticket Wikki Tourists at the Karkanda Stadium in Katsina.

Former FC Taraba defender, Chinedu Ohanachom scored the only goal of the match in the 25th minute to take El Kanemi points haul to 49 points from 37 matches. They are now 12th on the log.

Wikki on their part have slipped to fifth on the log with 60 points from 37 matches. They must beat Pillars in Bauchi on the final day of the season by as many goals as possible while hoping that other results are in their favour.

DOLPHINS 2-1 HEARTLAND

The Pride of Rivers are planning great escape from the relegation zone after they came back from a goal down to beat the Naze Millionaires at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt.

Ex-Dolphins star, Victor Ezeji scored the Owerri side opener in the 15th minute but two goals through Christian Weli and Chinwendu Ali in the 24th and 90th minutes guided the Port Harcourt side to the all important three points.

Dolphins are 16th on the log with 44 points from 37 matches while Heartland dropped to eighth spot with 53 points from 37 games.

GIWA FC 1-0 3SC

The Plateau Elephants are closer to grabbing a continental ticket at the end of the league season after they dimmed 3SC 1-0 at the Rwang Pam Stadium, Jos on Sunday.

Charles Okoro’s 65th minute strike was enough to seal three points. They moved to third on the log with 63 points from 37 games while 3SC are ninth with 52 points from 37 ties.

FC IFEANYIUBAH 0-2 NASARAWA UNITED

Just like last season, the Solid Miners will seal a spot on the continent if they beat Giwa FC on the final day of the season this weekend after another impressive performance at the Gabros International Stadium, Nnewi against FC IfeanyiUbah.

The Lafia side are in the in-form team of the second stanza after they grabbed their fourth road win with a convincing 2-0 victory over the Anambra Warriors. Goals from Philip Auta and Thomas Zenke in the 43rd and 76th minutes provided the armoury for the key win.

Nasarawa United are fourth on the log with 60 points from 37 matches-three points adrift of the Plateau Elephants while FC IfeanyiUbah  are 10th on the log with 50 points from 37 games.

SHARKS 1-0 KWARA UNITED

The Blue Angels took care of the Harmony Warriors 1-0 at the Adokie Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt where they have been banished to for their next three home ties after their abandonment of the Nasarawa United tie in Lafia recently.

Kwara United’s Saka Habeeb was the culprit after he handled the ball in the 18 yards box. Christian Pyagbara scored the crucial spot kick in the 63rd minute to send the Ilorin side to relegation barely a season in the top flight.

Sharks are 15th on the log with 45 points from 37 matches while Kwara United are 18th on the log with 39 points from 37 matches.

FC TARABA 2-1 ABIA WARRIORS

Despite the fact that their fate had been decided, the Jalingo side still managed a home win in Abuja against the Umuahia side on Sunday.

OLusola Ajala put FC Taraba in the lead in the 24th minute but Ifeanyi Onyeali leveled up for Abia Warriors in the 71st minute. When Warriors thought they had sealed a point after the equalizer, FC Taraba’s Stephen Adah struck back with the winner in the 72nd minute.

FC Taraba are 19th on the log with 37 points from 37 games while Abia Warriors are 11th with 50 points from 37 games.

ENYIMBA 0-0 WARRI WOLVES

10 man People’s Elephants had to battle harder before they could secure the point that handed them their record setting seventh league title before a record capacity crowd that watched them at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba on Sunday against the Seasiders.

Enyimba had everything going for them until Daniel Etor was red carded in the 50th minute for retaliation but the Aba giants dug deep to hold the rampaging Warri Wolves side who came with Gbolahan Salami, Stanley Dimgba and the rest.

The twice CAF Champions League champions have accumulated 69 points from 37 matches to stay atop the league log while Warri Wolves are still second on the log with 63 points from 37 matches.

BAYELSA UNITED 1-2 SUNSHINE STARS

Already doomed Restoration Boys could not restore their pride at the Oghara Township Stadium on Sunday after they let slip a goal lead to lose at home to the Owena Waves 2-1 on Sunday.

Bayelsa United took the lead in the second minute through Jafar Buhari but Tamen Medrano and Luter Iyorhe put the Akure side in the ascendancy through their goals in the 54th and 65th minutes. Medrano’s effort was from the penalty spot.

Bayelsa United are last on the log with 34 points from 37 matches while Akure Gunners are sixth on the log with 59 points from 36 matches. They can spring a continental ticket surprise if they are able to beat Lobi Stars on Wednesday in their rescheduled clash in Abuja. They trailed in that encounter 1-0 before fans’ violence forced the match to be stopped in the 77th minute.

LOBI STARS 2-0 ENUGU RANGERS

The Pride of Benue are closing in on a place among the elite class next season after they thumped underwhelming Rangers side 2-0 at the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi.

This fixture generated so much furore because of the controversy that brewed after they clashed in the semi final of the 2015 Federation Cup where the Flying Antelopes alleged they were robbed.

But in Makurdi  on Sunday, Rangers had no complaints after goals from Anthony Agbaji and Tony Okpotu in the 38th and 75th minute sealed a rather comfortable win assisted by the straight red card given to Rangers’ Senegalese Pape Ousmane for an off the ball kick on Okpotu.

Lobi are 13th on the league table with 46 points from 36 matches while Rangers are 14th on the log with 46 points from 37 games.
