Britain's Johanna Konta was beaten 6-4 3-6 7-5 by former world number one Venus Williams in the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open.
Konta, 24, had won 21 of her previous 22 matches and served for a place in the last four, but found the 35-year-old American too strong in China.
The Briton, who beat world number two Simona Halep on Wednesday, was broken when 5-3 up in the final set.
Williams will meet Italian Roberta Vinci in the semi-finals.
