'Draxler chose money over Juventus'

The Germany international has been accused of choosing financial gain ahead of ambition by one of the clubs he spurned in the summer

Juventus CEO Giuseppe Marotta says Julian Draxler chose money over a move to Turin after rejecting the club in favour of joining Wolfsburg.

The Germany international was linked with the Serie A champions for much of last season but opted to leave Schalke for their Bundesliga rivals over the summer.

And Marotta - who has watched Juve make a disastrous start to the defence of their league title - still harbours resentment over Draxler's decision to reject his club.

He said: "Last July he was ready to come to Juventus, then he changed his mind and he preferred to earn more money in Germany."

Juve were forced to look for alternative midfield reinforcements, with Hernanes arriving from Inter in a £15 million deal - though Marotta admitted he wasn't his preferred option.

"He wasn't a first choice, we're aware he's not a phenomenon but we're still convinced we've made a good signing," he added.

Juan Cuadrado also joined the club on a season-long loan deal from Premier League champions Chelsea, and the Juve chief is hopeful of sealing a permanent deal next summer.

"We currently don't have an option to buy him, but he's happy here and he wishes he could stay with us for more years. We'll talk about it with Chelsea, we're currently very confident."
