BREAKING NEWS: Mascherano cleared to play in Clasico

The Argentine could have missed up to four matches, including the Merengue test, but a reduction of his sentence leaves him free to take the field at the Bernabeu

Barcelona star Javier Mascherano has been banned for two matches following his red card against Eibar - but will be able to play in the first Clasico of the season.

There had been fears that the Argentine would be sidelined for the Real Madrid clash, which will take place at Santiago Bernabeu on November 21, after he was shown a straight red card for dissent in the 3-1 win last Sunday, but the RFEF has confirmed that will not be the case.

Instead, the 31-year-old will miss La Liga fixtures against Getafe away and Villarreal at home.

Mascherano had seen red for an obscene outburst at a linesman, and had faced a suspension of up to four games.

The Competitions Committee of the Spanish Federation, however, lowered the punishment.

The Barcelona man's language was deemed an act of contempt by the RFEF's disciplinary body, and not insulting - hence the lighter sentence.

Barcelona in turn have withdrawn their intention to appeal the decision, and have accepted the two-match sanction that leaves the former Argentina captain free to face Madrid.
