Basketball:IWBF Asia Oceania Zone adds four new nations, elects new officers


Four new countries were welcomed by the IWBF Asia Oceania Congress during the 2015 IWBF Asia Oceania Zone (AOZ) Championships that took place last week in Chiba, Japan.

The new member nations, which were approved for full membership at the IWBF Congress held in Incheon, Korea in 2014, are D.P.R Korea, Laos, Myanmar, and Nepal.

Afghanistan and India were also approved by the IWBF Executive Council and will be presented for full membership at the next IWBF Congress in 2018 in Hamburg, Germany.

Of these countries, only Afghanistan participated in the zone championship, fielding a men's team that finished 12th.

Elections for a new Executive Council were also held with Saad Alazmaa of Kuwait becoming the new President of the Asia Oceania Zone.

The other officers are: Vice-President of East Asia, Osamu Kotaki (Japan); Vice-President of South East Asia, Ang Kean Koo (Malaysia); Vice-President of West Asia, Anisa Alhooti (Oman); Vice-President of Oceania, Lorraine Landon (Australia); Treasurer, Phatt Krissna (Thailand); Classifications Officer, Toufic Allouche (Lebanon); and Technical Officer, Matthew Wells (Australia).

The Executive Council appointed Don Perriman of Australia as the new Secretary General of the Zone.
