Cricket:I was wrong choice to be England captain, says Kevin Pietersen

Kevin Pietersen has admitted he was not experienced enough to captain England.

The batsman took over from Michael Vaughan in 2008 and was in charge for just three Tests and nine ODIs.

He stepped down from the role in January 2009 and was replaced by Andrew Strauss on the same day that Peter Moores was sacked as coach.

And the South African-born player said he was the wrong man for the role and could not handle issues like bowler Steve Harmison's homesickness.

"I hadn't gone through a bad patch in my career - everything I'd touched had turned to gold," he wrote in his new book which is serialised in The Daily Telegraph.

"So I didn't understand the pressure that comes with failure, couldn't give sound advice and guidance and couldn't be as tolerant with people out of form as I should have been.

"To be a good leader I'd also have needed to know how important families are, and how much you miss them.

"It's the kind of thing you think you understand even if you're single.

"I didn't get Steve Harmison's homesickness issues, and all I could think was, what's wrong with you? You're playing for England, you're doing everything that you're supposed to want to do."
