Tennis:Johanna Konta failed to reach the last eight in Linz
British No 1 Johanna Konta is out of the Generali Ladies Linz after a straight sets second-round loss to Madison Brengle.
Konta has been in excellent form of late but faltered at key moments against her American opponent, who is through to the quarter finals after a 6-3 7-5 victory.
Konta was handed a lucky loser place in the Linz draw and romped past Germany's Annika Beck in her opening match.
However, the 24-year-old was not at her best against Brengle, who is ranked five places above her at 42 in the world.
Brengle was solid in set one, losing just two points on her first serve and saving the only break point Konta was able to force.
And the American converted a break point of her own in the fourth game before going on to secure the opening set.
However, the second set was a lot more topsy-turvy, and featured no less than nine breaks of serve.
After five breaks in a row to start the set, Brengle finally held to secure a 4-2 lead, only for Konta to respond by winning the next two games in a row to level at 4-4.
More breaks followed but Brengle claimed the decisive one in the 11th game, before holding to clinch victory in just over an hour and a half.
Konta showed plenty of spirit though, fighting back to win the game from 0-40 down when Brengle served for the match at 5-4, and then saving more match points two games later, before eventually suffering just her fourth loss in 27 matches since Wimbledon.
Brengle advances to tackle Sweden's Johanna Larsson or Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck in the last eight.
