Waqar Younis believes Younus Khan should have delayed his retirement from one-day cricket until after Pakistan's series with England.
The veteran batsman, who made nine in the first ODI having been recalled to the side for the first time since the World Cup, stunned his team-mates by quitting the format after his side's victory in Abu Dhabi.
Speaking ahead of the third ODI with England on Tuesday, the Pakistan coach said he was shocked by the decision.
Younis said: "Reality demanded that he should have completed the series. But that is the way he thinks and he is, I am very proud of the way he played the game.
"He will continue to play Test cricket and I am hopeful that he will complete 10,000 Test runs but it was an unfortunate way [to retire] and the decision was sudden and that was a big shock for us."
It comes after Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Shaharyar Khan spoke of his sadness at the timing of the announcement.
He said: "I am disappointed at not only his decision to retire from ODIs but also the timing of his decision."
Alex Hales' maiden ODI hundred helped England win by 95 runs on Friday to level the five-match series.
