Golf:Jason Day impresses with six-stroke victory in the Barclays Championship

Jason Day has run away with the first event of the US PGA Tour’s lucrative end-of-season playoff series to assume top spot in the FedExCup standings.

Following on from his major breakthrough at the PGA Championship, Day carded a brilliant bogey-free final-round eight-under-par 62 in New Jersey on Sunday to secure his third victory from his past four starts.

The world No3 finished at 19-under for the championship, six shots clear of Henrik Stenson (66) and will head to the second event in the four-tournament playoffs in Boston starting on Thursday in pole position to land the $US10m bonus prize.

In addition to the $US1.485m winner’s purse, Day also collected 2000 FedExCup points for his latest success to leap above Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson and Jimmy Walker in the overall standings.
