Mourinho explains why winning the Champions League is easier for Barcelona, Real Madrid & Bayern Munich
The former Chelsea boss thinks English clubs are at a disadvantage in European competitions as they compete for the league title into the closing stages of the season

Jose Mourinho has suggested it is easier for the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich to win the Champions League than it is for English clubs due to the competitive nature of the Premier League.

Mourinho's former club Chelsea crashed out of the competition at the last 16 stage against Paris Saint-Germain, who have already been crowned Ligue 1 champions with eight games left to play in the season.

And Mourinho believes juggling fixture congestion and a tighter race for the league title leaves the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City at a disadvantage in Europe.

"Some countries in this moment, it is easier for them," Mourinho told BT Sport. "A team who are champions in February - that team have much more conditions to be successful than a team that are playing until the last match of the season in May.

"I'll give you an example: Two years ago I played Champions League semi-final with Chelsea against Atletico Madrid.

"Two days later I was playing Liverpool v Chelsea at Anfield to decide the champions of England.

"So I would look to a Spanish team - Barcelona, Real Madrid - I would look to a German team - Bayern Munich - and I would say comparing the competitive realities during 10 months [of the compertition], I think they arrive in the key moment of the season in better conditions than other clubs."
