Tennis:Maria Sharapova withdraws from Qatar Open with forearm injury

Injury has ended Maria Sharapova's bid for a third Qatar Open title
Six-time Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from the Qatar Open due to a recurrence of an arm injury.

It is the second time the world No 6 has pulled out of a tournament this season due to the same problem after missing her intended season-opener in Brisbane last month.

"Unfortunately, I will not be able to play the Qatar Open later this month because of my left forearm injury," the 28-year-old Russian said in statement released by Qatar Tennis.

"I would like to wish the tournament and all the great fans in Doha a great week of tennis and I hope to see them next year."

Sharapova, who won the event in 2005 and 2008, misses out in joining a strong field for the 14th edition of the tournament including Serena Williams, Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep and recent Australian Open winner Angelique Kerber.

The Qatar Open takes places from February 21-27.
