NFL:San Francisco 49ers fire head coach Jim Tomsula after one failed season
The San Francisco 49ers have fired head coach Jim Tomsula after only a year in charge.
Tomsula had been an assistant coach with the 49ers from 2007-14, serving one game as interim coach in 2010, before being promoted last year.
Following the exit of Jim Harbaugh in January 2015, Tomsula was appointed to the top position but a losing 5-11 record saw them finish bottom of the NFC West.
Tomsula was hampered by the loss of form and injury of quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who was previously seen as the face of the franchise, while San Francisco played most of the season without injured running back Carlos Hyde.
49ers chief executive officer Jed York said: "Jimmy has been a valuable member of the 49ers organisation for the last nine years.
"We all know he is a man of high character, and his contributions on the field and in our community have always been greatly appreciated.
"This entire organization is proud and grateful to have worked so closely alongside Jimmy. We all wish him and his family great success in the future."
San Francisco reached the Super Bowl in the 2012 season, and the NFC Championship the next year, before conflict between Harbaugh and the front office along with player turnover sent them into a downward spiral.
Tomsula was the second head coach axed within hours of the end of the regular season on Sunday, following the Cleveland Browns' Mike Pettine out the door. Philadelphia set the ball rolling when they fired Chip Kelly following their Week 16 defeat to Washington Redskins.
