Stephen Curry sat out with an injured leg as the Golden State Warriors fell to only their second defeat of the season, going down 114-91 to the Dallas Mavericks.
Curry, the NBA's reigning MVP and strong favourite to retain the award, missed his first game of the season with a bruised lower leg and the Warriors had an off night shooting to drop their record to 29-2.
Klay Thompson and Draymond Green managed to hit only eight of their 30 combined attempts, and the Warriors were led by little-used bench player Ian Clark, who scored 21 points to easily surpass a career high.
But the reigning champions were up against it from tip-off, with Dallas opening up a six-point lead in the first period and extending that to 18 by half-time.
JJ Barea continued to impress in his starting role, with regular Mavericks point guard Deron Williams sidelined, as he hit five three pointers on his way to a haul of 23 points and six assists.
Dirk Nowitzki scored 18 points and six Mavericks players reached double figures.
"They were a little short-handed tonight. Might have made a little difference," Dallas guard Devin Harris, who scored 13 points, said.
"The attention that he brings in shot-making and the way the offence flows with him out there, obviously was a little bit different tonight.''
