Jurgen Klopp has backed the 37-year-old to oversee the Anfield side's football development - from recruitment to infrastructure improvements

Liverpool are primed to announce that Michael Edwards has been promoted to the newly created position of sporting director.

The 37-year-old was highlighted as the ideal candidate for the role by manager Jurgen Klopp and Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon.

Edwards currently serves as technical director and his new scope will encompass much of his existing duties such as player identification, with added responsibilities.

Liverpool’s football development will be under his remit - from the entire recruitment process, to any improvements around playing facilities and upgrades in infrastructure.

Edwards joined the Anfield outfit in November 2011 as head of analytics, before being elevated to director of technical performance and then technical director.

He is highly regarded within Melwood, as well as by Liverpool’s ownership.
