Novak Djokovic opened his season with a 6-2 6-2 win over German qualifier Dustin Brown at the Qatar Open.
The top-ranked Serb was refreshed after avoiding the post-season exhibitions last month which followed an exhausting 2015 campaign in which he won three major titles.
Last year, Djokovic won a career-best 11 titles and finished with an 82-6 record.
Elsewhere, British No 3 Kyle Edmund saw off Martin Klizan of Slovakia 6-2 6-3 to advance to the next stage.
Bosnia's Damir Dzumhur beat Marco Cecchinato of Italy 6-4 6-2 and Jeremy Chardy of France comfortably defeated Qatar's Mubarak Shannan Zayid 6-1 6-1.
