Wildcard Clifford Enosoregbe on Monday continued from where he stopped in the first leg of the 2016 Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis as he caused the first major upset of the second leg of the men’s singles event.
The impressive Nigerian caused a stir when he upset seventh seed Benin Republic’s Alexis Klegou 6-4, 6-3 in the first round of the event at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, to the delight of the home fans.
Enosoregbe had also shocked number eight seed Polish Maciej Smola 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-2 in the second round of the first leg last week.
Other Nigerians who joined Enosoregbe in the second round are Joseph Ubon, who beat compatriot Christopher Ito 6-4, 6-4 and Mohammed Mohammed, who overcame Ghanaian Tsatsu Segbedzie 7-6, 6-4.
Sylvester Emmanuel, who also caused a major upset in the second round of the first leg, when he sent out Klegou 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 (1) in a grueling match that lasted three hours 15 minutes, also made it to the second round.
He defeated Ugandan Duncan Mugabe 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 while Thomas Otu beat fellow Nigerian Albert Bikom 6-1,6-4.
But Moses Michael was not so lucky, as he bowed out to Polish Smola 7-5,4-6,6-3. The Nigerian, backed by the fans gave his opponent a run for his money before exiting the championship.
Christopher Bulus also lost to Sasi Mukund of India 6-0,6-2 while Ikechukwu Iloputa lost to Tunisian Moez Echargui 6-2,6-2.
In the women’s singles, Valeriya Strakhova of Ukraine beat up-and-coming Nigerian Angel MaCleod 6-0, 6-0. Top seed Valetini Grammatikopoulou from Greece beat Swede Brenda Njuki 6-4, 7-6,while Harmony Tan (France) defeated Japanese Ange Oby Kajuru 6-1,6-1.
Bulgarian Julia Terziyska defeated French Estelle Casino 6-2, 7-5 as more first round matches continue on Tuesday (today) at the LLTC.
