UFC star Conor McGregor incurs wrath of WWE superstars

Following an online backlash, McGregor - who is currently preparing for his highly-anticipated rematch with Nate Diaz on August 20 - later issued a tongue-in-cheek clarification on Twitter.

"I didn't mean no disrespect to the @wwe fans," the UFC featherweight champion wrote.

"What I meant to say was that I'd slap the head off your entire roster. And twice on Sunday's."

That prompted some of WWE's finest to go to town on the 28-year-old Dubliner.

"Your the size of my leg. Shut up," Roman Reigns tweeted.

"I think McGregor could do well in the featherweight division......if the WWE had one," AJ Styles wrote.

"Would you prefer to find us individually or have us all line up at once? I know your time is valuable, sir," was Big E's response. 

"Never show a Jack Russell a mirror. It thinks it's a majestic Irish Wolfhound. Really, just an annoying wee yapper trying to sell tickets," McGregor's compatriot, Sheamus, posted.

And former WWE stars Ric Flair and MVP also waded into the mixed martial artist.

"Coming from a guy who built a career copying my persona, I expected the type of class we get from Ronda [Rousey] or Anderson [Silva]," Flair tweeted.

While MVP chipped in with: "The way Nate Diaz Stockton slapped you or nah?"

McGregor suffered a submission loss to Diaz at UFC 196

McGregor was the overwhelming favourite heading into his clash with Diaz at UFC 196 but was choked out by his 31-year-old opponent at the MGM Garden Arena in March.

"I didn't give enough credit to Nate's durability, his experience," McGregor admitted. "He's had more UFC fights than I've had fights.

"His durability held out, his experience held out for him, so this time, I've been preparing for that.

"I've been preparing to face a durable, experienced fighter who has the reach, the height and the length. I feel very confident that we will go in and get this win back and put this man away."
