Church tragedy: FG doctors operate 30 victims

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has said a team of medical experts sent by the Federal Government to Akwa Ibom State, has successfully operated 30 of the surviving victims of the collapsed Reigners Bible Church Int’l Inc in Uyo.

The operated victims, the minister said, were among the critically injured persons in the church building collapse, which happened last Saturday.

According to a statement made available to our correspondent on Thursday, the team, in a report on Thursday, told the minister that a total of 30 surgical patients were presented to them and they had successfully completed all procedures.

“I wish to inform you that the team you sent to Uyo has successfully completed all surgical procedures in both hospitals.

“A total of 30 victims were presented with various injuries and fractures,” the team reportedly told the minister.

The Federal Government’s medical experts, comprising two neurosurgeons, three orthopaedic surgeons, three plastic surgeons and two specially trained operating room nurses, had arrived in the state on Monday.

Meanwhile, the state branch of the Nigeria Medical Association has donated drugs worth thousands of naira to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital as aid for the victims of Reigners Bible Church disaster on December 10.

The items were presented to the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Etete Peters, on Thursday in Uyo.

Presenting the items, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association, Dr. Aniekeme Uwah, said the donation was a ‘love gift’ to the hospital and a gesture to share solidarity with the people of  Akwa Ibom  over the church collapse tragedy.

The NMA chairman said the action would complement donations from other organisations, and assured survivors of the disaster of public concern for their well-being.

Peters, who received the donation, described the NMA gesture as not only  timely, but a rare show of solidarity at a time when the state was still grappling  with  the unexpected tragedy.

He explained that though the teaching hospital was overwhelmed by the magnitude of the disaster but with the help of God the situation had been brought under control.
