Cycling:Dakar Rally’s first stage cancelled for ‘security reasons’ after bad weather

The first stage of the 2016 Dakar Rally has been cancelled due to heavy rain, with organisers taking no chances over road safety after a horrific crash blighted the prologue stage on Saturday.

Competitors had been due to set off from Rosario to Villa Carlos Paz but will now start this year’s race from the start of the second stage, which starts on Monday. Drivers will instead drive in convoy on the highway to Villa Carlos Paz, starting their 5,000-mile journey from there – the race travelling through Argentina and Bolivia before finishing back in Rosario.

Crucially the helicopters that fly overhead the motorcycles, quad bikes, cars and trucks – providing safety assistance to the racers – were not able to fly in the conditions.

Marquinhos may consider PSG exit

Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos says he may be forced to consider his future at the Parc des Princes if he fails to cement a first-team place.

The Brazil international joined the Ligue 1 champions in July 2013 from Roma, but has failed to become a regular starter, with compatriots David Luiz and Thiago Silva PSG's favoured centre-back pairing.
Marquinhos has made just 12 league appearances this term, starting only seven, and Premier League duo Chelsea and Manchester United are reportedly monitoring his situation.

The Real Madrid star will turn 31 in February and it’s inevitable that over the next few years there will be rumours about his next move.

However, Ronaldo insists he is not thinking about taking on a coaching role when his time in the limelight comes to an end.

"There is another life after football,” he said in an interview with Papel.

“I think at first it will be tough [not playing], but if you ask me now if I want to coach, I would say no. Neither [would I want to be] a club director nor a president.

Hazard substituted after 15 minutes with injury

Eden Hazard lasted only 15 minutes in Chelsea's clash with Crystal Palace on Sunday, having pulled out of the game with injury and being replaced by Pedro.

The Belgium international started at Selhurst Park on Sunday but looked to be struggling with a muscle injury for a few minutes before he signalled to the bench that he wanted to come off.

Chelsea have since revealed Hazard twitched his groin after taking a shot minutes before.

"I try to train and I try to play in games and to do the best I possibly can in order to attain that level and to be able to make it.

"Of course, getting to be number one keeper in the world is a tough ask because there are loads of goalkeepers out there and some very good ones, too.

"But I always try to give my very best to reach that standard."

Injuries rule Sturridge & Henderson out of Liverpool's trip to West Ham

Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson are not part of Liverpool’s travelling squad for their first fixture of 2016 away to West Ham.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has decided that Sturridge would be best served continuing his intense rehabilitation program as the club attempt to build up his strength and resistance.

Henderson, meanwhile, is still suffering from discomfort in his heel which he felt during the 1-0 victory over Sunderland on Wednesday.

The England international had to be replaced in the 61st minute, and Liverpool are assessing the problem on a day-to-day basis.

The 25-year-old’s condition is known as plantar fasciitis and is an ongoing concern. After limping off with it against Bournemouth at the start of the season, he flew to New York with club doctor Andy Massey in mid-September to visit orthopaedic specialist Dr John Cozzarelli.

On the injury, Henderson explained: “There isn't a timescale, there isn't really a cure… There is nothing set in stone for this.

Cricket:James Anderson set to replace Woakes

Pace bowler James Anderson is set to return for England's second Test against South Africa in Cape Town.

Anderson missed the 241-run first-Test win with a calf strain but is likely to replace Chris Woakes for the match at Newlands, which begins on Saturday.

"My thought is you'd probably go with him, so fingers crossed he comes to us and says his body's feeling good," said England coach Trevor Bayliss.

South Africa pace bowler Dale Steyn misses out with a shoulder injury.

Steyn, ranked as the number one Test bowler in the world, twice left the field during the first Test in Durban and will be replaced by Kagiso Rabada.

Another Proteas pace bowler, Kyle Abbott, faces a fitness test on Friday, while wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock could be included to allow AB de Villiers to concentrate solely on batting.

Anderson worked hard in the nets during the Durban Test, building up to a full six-over spell in the middle on Wednesday morning.

The 33-year-old, England's leading Test wicket-taker, has 18 victims in five Tests in two previous tours of South Africa.

Without him, England were still able to bowl South Africa out for 214 and 174 in the first Test in Durban, with Moeen Ali taking six wickets in the match, Steven Finn six and Stuart Broad five.

Broad took the first over in both innings in Durban and former England spinner Graeme Swann has backed the Nottinghamshire seamer to lead the attack even when Anderson returns.

"Jimmy's performance would not be affected by not being the official leader of the attack," Swann told BBC Radio 5 live. "I'd say we are going to hand that to Stuart now because we are looking for leaders and future captains in this team.

Cycling:Chris Froome awarded OBE in New Year Honours

Chris Froome has been awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours for his services to cycling.

The Team Sky rider this year became the first Briton to win the Tour de France twice.

He won the Tour for the first time in 2013 and has also won the Criterium du Dauphine twice and the Tour de Romandie twice in the past three years.

Froome told Sky Sports News HQ: "This really does bring such an amazing year to a close for me in a really nice way, both professionally and personally.

"It's extremely humbling. It's not a trophy or a race that you can win in a sporting capacity. It's not something that I go out and look for, but at the same time, it's really nice when it comes your way."

Boxing:Jose Argumedo stops Katsunari Takayama to win IBF minimumweight title

Jose Argumedo is the new IBF minimumweight champion after shocking Katsunari Takayama via technical decision.

Takayama (30-8-KO12) was fighting in front of his home fans in Japan's second city, Osaka, and attempting to make the third defence of his title having previously held all four versions of the crown.

Although a pre-fight underdog, Argumedo (16-3-1-KO9) was quickly to work in establishing himself. He will have gained more heart from Takayama's seemingly inferior conditioning and the fact the champion was cut by an accidental head clash in the second round.

Takayama showed glimpses of former glories in the third and fourth as he took the fight to the Mexican challenger but although he continued to try and force the pace in six and seven, Argumedo was picking his spots well and appeared to score a knockdown in the ninth.

I accept this result. I had my left optic badly swollen and bleeding so badly that the blood entered my eyes to prevent me from watching Argumedo well.
